ATLANTA, GEORGIA—FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta on Wednesday said he could not rule out the possibility of the return of Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi to the soccer team.
Laporta made the statement as the team complete the signing of former player Dani Alves.
Alves, 38, has signed a contract with Barca until the end of the season and was presented at Camp Nou in front of over 10,000 supporters on Wednesday.
The Brazil international, who left Barca in 2016 after eight years at the club, cannot be registered until January but is already training with his new teammates.
“Leo and Andres are two spectacular players. I can’t predict the future. They are Barca greats and who made this club what it is and they will always be present, but they’re players with contracts with other clubs. That must be respected, but in life you never know,” Laporta said.
In an earlier media interview, Messi said he is open to the idea of re-joining Barca once his two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain ends.
Speaking with Spanish outlet SPORT, Messi said he loves Barcelona, and if by chance he has the chance to return he will grab the opportunity.
“But what is almost certain is that we’re going to return to live in Barcelona and our life will be there,” Messi said.
“I have always said that I would love to help the club and be useful. I would love to be a sporting director at some point. I don’t know if it will be in Barcelona or not. Or if it will be something else.” Messi added.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi scored 672 goals in 778 games for Barcelona and won 34 major trophies during his 21 seasons in Catalonia.
In his formal introduction to the media as a member of PSG, Messi said leaving FCB was one of the toughest moments in his life.
Messi said that now that he had a new team with PSG he is very motivated to play and hopefully win championships with the soccer club.
“My exit from Barca was very tough, after so many years, but as soon as I arrived here I was so happy, so motivated, so excited. It has happened so fast, but I am enjoying it so much,” Messi said.
“My goal and my dream are to win the Champions League once more. I think that we have the team to do it here,” Messi added.
In signing his PSG contract, Messi is expected to earn between €30-35 million ($35-41m) net a year.
PSG was able to contact Messi on August 4 after his supposed five-year contract with Barca fell due to economic problems.
