ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Atlanta United FC back-up goalkeeper Alec Kann had decided to leave the team during free agency to become the starting goalie of FC Cincinnati.
United FC Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said both the team and Kann agreed to sign a new contract during free agency but getting the chance to be the starter is something the veteran goalkeeper could not let go of.
Bocanegra said Kann is a great teammate and the team is grateful to have him since 2017.
“We had an agreement with Alec to re-sign in free agency, however, an opportunity came up for him to be the No. 1 goalkeeper after doing a great job as our No. 2 over the last five seasons. He joined Atlanta United for our expansion season in 2017 and was a great teammate, a great person and we want to thank him for his service to the club,” Bocanegra said.
A native of Decatur, Georgia, Kann was picked by United FC in the fifth round of the 2016 MLS Expansion Draft and started 18 matches in the club’s inaugural season in 2017. In 2021, Kann started five matches of the MLS regular season.
At the moment, United FC is gearing up for another solid performance in the MLS 2022 season.
For its opening salvo in the MLS 2022 season, the United FC will host the dangerous Sporting Kansas City on February 27, 2022, at 3 p.m. (ET) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The match will be broadcast nationally and will be the first time Atlanta and Sporting KC face each other in a season opener.
It was also announced that Atlanta will face Colorado Rapids on Saturday, March 5 at 6 p.m. (ET) at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in the reigning-Western Conference regular-season champions’ home opener. TV information for all matches will be announced at a later date, along with the remainder of the club’s MLS schedule.
The 2022 MLS season will feature 28 clubs, 14 in each conference, with clubs playing each team in its conference twice and eight teams from the other conference once for a total of 34 matches. After today’s announcement, Atlanta has six remaining matches against Western Conference opponents to be announced.
