In one of our previous articles, we’ve shared an initial list of the best coaching candidates for Atlanta United. Today, we’re moving on to the second part.
In case you missed it, Frank de Boer has parted ways with the team. Stephen Glass, the head coach of Atlanta United 2, has temporarily taken over. But it seems that he might not be the one to take the reins for the foreseeable future, given the availability of many coaching candidates in the market. Let’s take a closer look at who the Five Stripes can acquire as their head coach.
In recent memory, you would not consider Aguirre to be a viable candidate, given an unsuccessful relegation salvage operation. However, his style of play, reminiscent of Tata Martino’s attacking strategy, is one that Atlanta United won’t have a problem adjusting to. Another plus is that he sees the potential of the American soccer league in terms of global reach. So giving him an offer to coach an MLS club, especially with one of the best clubs, is something he would probably consider.
Recently being linked with joining the club is Gustavo Alfaro, who also possesses a Martino-style play. With a decorated list of accomplishments in South American leagues (Supercopa Argentina – Boca Juniors and Copa Sudamericana – Arsenal de Sarandi), he has been previously linked to the MLS. There’s a high possibility that the front office might be in talks with the Argentinian.
There are also some assistant coaches in the MLS that are very promising. Hendrickson has coached on different teams in the U.S and has a record of enough experience to warrant a head coaching opportunity. He also has the potential to have a long coaching career in the MLS, given his age and experience helping with national team efforts (St. Vincent and the Grenadines MST).
Besides the lack of an experienced coach right now, Atlanta United has other problems to address. They need to get Ezequiel Barco and Pity Martinez in top form if they want to replace Josef Martinez. There have been some substantial additions with the signing of midfielders Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres and Jurgen Damm, who can help the team’s attacking weaknesses.
Rumors of signing Jonathan Gonzalez are also reportedly in the works. Snagging a talented young midfielder like him would definitely help the team. Efrain Morales has been added, but we have to wait and see what this up and coming player can do. That being said, it’s essential to lock in a head coach. A team full of skilled players isn’t a guarantee to win games if they don’t have someone who can lead them.
