For Caitlin Conroy, soccer started simply.
A ball in the garden. Her family on the sidelines. A young girl in England discovering a game that would eventually take her across the Atlantic and into the heart of Statesboro.
Years later, Conroy is preparing to finish her fourth season with Georgia Southern women’s soccer, and the England native has found much more than a college soccer program in the ‘Boro.
She’s found a second home.
From playing with the boys at school to joining an academy, from dreaming about playing college soccer in the United States to becoming an important contributor for the Eagles, Conroy’s journey has been shaped by family, opportunity and a genuine love for the game.
And she isn’t finished yet.
It Started With a Soccer Ball in the Garden
Conroy’s earliest soccer memories aren’t complicated.
She was four or five years old, kicking a ball around the garden with her family nearby.
Then her elementary school hosted a session with a local football club.
That experience changed everything.
Conroy went home knowing she wanted to play outside of school, and her mother helped her join a local girls’ team.
Soon, soccer was becoming more than another activity.
She also played netball, swam and competed in cross-country, but eventually realized that pursuing soccer seriously meant making a choice.
Around age nine or 10, Conroy began focusing almost entirely on football and moved into academy soccer.
That decision would eventually open a much bigger door.
The Road to Statesboro
By the time Conroy was around 14, her family had introduced her to the idea of playing collegiate soccer in the United States.
The opportunity was different from anything she had experienced.
She could earn a degree while continuing to play the sport she loved.
By 15, she knew she wanted to make the move.
The connection with Georgia Southern came through a showcase in England.
Conroy was playing in front of representatives from an agency that helped female players find college opportunities in America when Georgia Southern head coach Chris Adams saw her play.
The conversation afterward eventually led to a visit to Statesboro.
She arrived with her mother, Lacy, and spent a long weekend experiencing campus life and the soccer facilities.
The decision became surprisingly easy.
Georgia Southern had what she was looking for.
And the ‘Boro quickly started feeling like home.
From England to the ‘Boro
Moving across an ocean for college is a major adjustment for any young athlete.
For Conroy, it became an opportunity to experience far more than soccer.
She has traveled throughout the United States with Georgia Southern, visiting places including Montana, Hawaii and Washington, D.C.
For an international student, those experiences have become part of what makes her college years so memorable.
But the most important part of Statesboro may have been the people.
Conroy describes her teammates as a family.
Her roommates became her best friends, and the relationships she developed through Georgia Southern women’s soccer have become just as meaningful as the games themselves.
That’s a major part of the college soccer experience that doesn’t show up in a box score.
Conroy’s Game Has Grown, Too
While the off-field experience has been important, Conroy has continued to develop as a player.
The fourth-year midfielder has steadily improved throughout her Georgia Southern career.
One of the biggest breakthroughs came recently.
After going 40 matches without scoring, Conroy found the back of the net in consecutive games against Arkansas State and Georgia State.
Her second goal came during Georgia Southern’s 2-1 loss to Georgia State on Sept. 24, when she capitalized on a turnover and scored in the 86th minute to spark a late Eagles comeback.
Georgia Southern ultimately fell short, but Conroy’s goal was another reminder of the attacking value she can provide.
The numbers also show her broader contribution.
She currently ranks second on the team in assists and third in points during her fourth season.
And with Georgia Southern competing in another important Sun Belt campaign, that production could become increasingly important down the stretch.
The People Behind the Player
Conroy is quick to point back toward the people who helped her get here.
Her mother has been there from the beginning.
Training sessions. Late nights. Gym sessions. Long drives.
Weather didn’t matter.
Her mom was there.
Her two aunts, Emma and Hannah, were also fixtures on the sideline and important voices in her development.
Conroy credits them with providing the support — and sometimes the tough love — she needed to keep pushing toward the next level.
It’s a familiar story in soccer.
Behind almost every college player is a group of people who sacrificed time, energy and resources long before the athlete’s name appeared on a roster.
For Conroy, that support system stretches all the way back to those first kicks in England.
What’s Next for Caitlin Conroy?
Conroy isn’t ready to close the book on soccer.
Her biggest dream is to play professionally.
Ideally, she’d like to remain in the United States, but she understands that the professional game could take her somewhere else.
And if that path doesn’t materialize, she already knows what she wants to do.
Coach.
Conroy wants to eventually share her love of the game with younger players and help girls pursue the same kinds of opportunities that soccer has given her.
That’s a fitting goal for someone whose own journey began with a family encouraging a young girl to keep kicking a ball around the garden.
What This Means for Georgia Southern
Conroy’s story is bigger than one player having a good senior season.
It’s a look at what the college soccer experience can mean for an international player.
She arrived from England with a dream of earning a degree and continuing her soccer career.
Now she’s entering the final stage of her Georgia Southern career as a proven contributor, a leader within the Eagles’ locker room and a player still dreaming about what comes next.
And she’s doing it while helping Georgia Southern compete in the Sun Belt.
ASN Take
There is something particularly fitting about Conroy’s story.
Her soccer journey began with the simplest version of the game: a kid, a ball and a family encouraging her to play.
Everything since then has been a progression.
Local girls’ soccer. Academy football. A decision to pursue the American college route. A showcase in England. A trip to Statesboro. Four seasons with Georgia Southern.
And now, potentially, a professional career.
That is what makes college soccer so important for players like Conroy. The game isn’t simply providing a place to compete. It’s giving her an education, lifelong friendships, experiences across the country and a pathway toward the next stage of her career.
Whatever comes next, Georgia Southern will always be part of that story.
A Georgia Southern Career Still Being Written
Conroy’s time in the ‘Boro isn’t quite finished.
With Georgia Southern continuing its Sun Belt campaign, there are still matches to play and memories to make.
And when the final whistle eventually comes on her collegiate career, Conroy will leave Statesboro having accomplished something much bigger than simply playing soccer in America.
She found a second home.
And she may have only just started writing the next chapter.
