In a hard-fought Sun Belt Conference clash, Smith Cathey delivered when it mattered most, netting a crucial goal in the 66th minute to secure Georgia Southern’s 1-0 road victory over Marshall on Sunday in Huntington, W.Va. The win improved the Eagles to 5-7-1 overall and 2-2 in Sun Belt play, while handing Marshall their first home loss of the season.
Georgia Southern’s dominance on the road continues, as they remain unbeaten in Sun Belt away matches this year. The Eagles will now turn their attention to another road battle against Old Dominion this Thursday.
The Eagles started strong, but it was Marshall who nearly drew first blood in the opening minute. Bailey Fisher fired a shot that looked destined for the net, only for Eagles’ sophomore goalkeeper Quinn Wilson to make a stunning leaping save, one of her two crucial stops in the first half.
The match remained tightly contested, with Marshall holding a narrow 4-2 shot advantage going into halftime. However, the breakthrough came in the 66th minute when a Marshall defensive slip gave Georgia Southern the edge. After a free kick deep in Marshall territory, Addison Comer capitalized on a miscue and found herself with the ball at the top of the box. Comer coolly delivered a pass to **Smith Cathey**, who calmly slotted home her team-leading fifth goal of the season, beating Marshall’s goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Georgia Southern had a chance to double their lead in the 77th minute when Maya Zovko found herself in a one-on-one with the keeper, but her shot sailed just high.
Marshall pressed for an equalizer late, with Madison Townes coming closest in the 79th minute, but her angled shot hit the side netting, preserving the Eagles’ clean sheet.
Despite Marshall finishing with a 7-6 advantage in shots, the Eagles’ defense held strong, anchored by Wilson, who recorded her second shutout of the season. Marshall was kept in check, with their last meaningful attempt coming up short as Georgia Southern weathered the storm.
