Chattanooga FC Has More Than a Regular-Season Finale Ahead

Chattanooga FC has already secured a home playoff match, but there is still plenty to play for when the club travels to face Chicago Fire FC II on Sunday.

The Chattanooga FC regular-season finale kicks off at 2 p.m. ET on September 20, with every Eastern Conference match starting simultaneously for MLS NEXT Pro Decision Day.

The Boys in Blue enter the final matchweek sitting just two points behind Crown Legacy FC in the Eastern Conference. Chattanooga is guaranteed to finish no lower than the No. 2 seed, but a path to the top spot remains open.

A win against Chicago, combined with Crown Legacy earning one point or fewer at FC Cincinnati 2, would give Chattanooga the Southeast Division title and No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.

So while the club has already accomplished one major objective, Sunday can still change where Chattanooga begins its playoff run.

The Focus Stays on Chicago

The equation may be straightforward, but Chattanooga defender Farid Sar-Sar emphasized that the team’s attention will remain on its own match.

“We’ll be fully focused on our game in Chicago,” Sar-Sar said.

That approach matters on a day when the standings will be moving in real time.

Chattanooga cannot control what happens in Cincinnati. It can control its performance against Chicago.

Sar-Sar said the team’s first priority after a potential win would be checking the Crown Legacy result.

That mindset fits the situation: take care of business first, then worry about the rest.

Chattanooga enters Decision Day having already proven it can compete near the top of the Eastern Conference. Now the club has an opportunity to finish the regular season by putting pressure on the conference leader.

A Historic Opportunity for an Independent Club

For captain Alex McGrath, the possibility of securing the top seed represents more than another line on the standings.

It would also reflect the work Chattanooga FC has put into building itself as an independent club competing against organizations with different levels of resources.

McGrath pointed to the standards the club has established over time and the trial-and-error involved in building a competitive team.

He also acknowledged the challenge of competing against clubs with larger budgets or better facilities.

That makes the opportunity particularly meaningful.

Chattanooga has already secured a home playoff match, something McGrath described as important because of the advantage of playing in front of the club’s supporters.

The next step would be finishing first.

For a club that has had to be deliberate with its resources, reaching the top seed would represent another marker in Chattanooga’s development.

Chattanooga and Chicago Meet for the Third Time This Season

Sunday will be the third meeting between Chattanooga FC and Chicago Fire FC II this season and the fifth overall meeting between the clubs in MLS NEXT Pro.

Chicago holds the historical edge at 2-0-2, although Chattanooga has shown it can make the matchup difficult.

The teams’ most recent meeting finished 2-2, with Chattanooga winning the ensuing shootout 4-1 to claim the additional point.

That history adds another layer to Sunday’s matchup.

Chicago has already been eliminated from postseason contention, but the Fire II will be playing its final match of the season at home. Chattanooga, meanwhile, enters with a playoff position secured and the possibility of moving into first place.

Neither side needs the same thing from the match, but both have reason to finish the regular season strongly.

Know the Opponent: Chicago Fire FC II

Chicago enters Decision Day with a 10-11-6 record, including three shootout victories, and currently sits 13th in the Eastern Conference.

The Fire II were eliminated from postseason contention after a 2-1 loss to Philadelphia Union II last week.

Head coach Mike Matkovich is in his second season leading the club, while former U.S. men’s national team defender Omar Gonzalez is in his first season as an assistant coach.

Forward Jason Shokalook leads Chicago with seven goals, while Damyan Villanueva has recorded a team-high seven assists.

For Chattanooga, the objective will be to close out the regular season with another complete performance and keep the pressure on Crown Legacy.

Decision Day Comes Down to 90 Minutes — and One More Result

Chattanooga FC’s situation is clear.

Win in Chicago.

Then watch what happens in Cincinnati.

If Chattanooga gets the victory and Crown Legacy FC earns no more than one point against FC Cincinnati 2, the Boys in Blue will finish first in the Eastern Conference and claim the Southeast Division title.

If that combination does not happen, Chattanooga has already secured a home playoff match and a finish no lower than second.

Either way, the regular season has put the club in a strong position heading into the postseason.

But there is one more prize within reach.

And it starts Sunday afternoon in Bridgeview.

ASN Take

Chattanooga FC has already secured the part of the equation every playoff contender wants: a home postseason match.

But Decision Day offers the club a chance to finish the job at the top.

The most important part is that Chattanooga does not need to complicate the task. The club controls what it can control — its performance against Chicago — before turning its attention to the Crown Legacy result.

For an independent club that has emphasized building standards and maximizing its resources, a potential No. 1 seed would be another meaningful milestone.

Sunday’s match is the final test before the playoffs.

And Chattanooga has a chance to enter them as the team at the top of the conference.
