Chattanooga FC fell 3-1 to Crown Legacy FC on Sunday evening at Sportsplex at Matthews in North Carolina, snapping a club-record 11-match unbeaten streak during the MLS NEXT Pro era. Despite the disappointing result, CFC remains firmly in the playoff picture and holds onto second place in the Eastern Conference with four regular-season matches remaining.
The final score did not tell the entire story. Chattanooga created more dangerous opportunities, finishing with a 1.40 expected goals total compared to Crown Legacy’s 1.00, while dominating the shot count 23-11. The 23 attempts also marked a club high for Chattanooga so far during the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro regular season.
Chattanooga FC Creates Chances but Crown Legacy Finds the Goals
The hosts struck first in the 25th minute when Andrej Subotić rose to meet a cross from substitute Mikah Thomas and headed home the opening goal.
Chattanooga continued to push forward and generate opportunities, but Crown Legacy doubled its advantage shortly after halftime. A misplaced back pass created an opening for Hugo Mbongue in the 50th minute, and the forward made no mistake as he extended the home side’s lead to 2-0.
To their credit, the Boys in Blue refused to let the match slip away without a fight.
Alex McGrath nearly sparked the comeback in the 61st minute when a flowing Chattanooga move ended with his effort striking the post. Just two minutes later, CFC found the breakthrough it had been searching for. Damien Barker John saw his initial effort saved, but Daniel Mangarov reacted quickly to the second chance and rifled home his second league goal of the season to cut the deficit in half.
Chattanooga continued pressing for an equalizer, with head coach Richard Dixon turning to his bench and making tactical adjustments as the visitors searched for a way back into the match. But despite controlling much of the attacking action, CFC could not find the tying goal.
Mbongue instead delivered the decisive blow in the 83rd minute, scoring his second of the evening against the run of play to seal the 3-1 result for Crown Legacy.
The Boys in Blue Remain in Strong Playoff Position
While Sunday’s defeat ended an impressive 11-match unbeaten streak, Chattanooga FC can take encouragement from its performance and its position in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Boys in Blue controlled 56% of possession, completed more passes than Crown Legacy and earned seven corner kicks while putting eight shots on target. Crown Legacy goalkeeper Isaac Walker was repeatedly called into action, making seven saves to keep Chattanooga from completing its comeback.
With four matches remaining, CFC remains in second place in the Eastern Conference and has already established itself as one of the teams to watch heading into the postseason. The challenge now will be turning a frustrating result into motivation for the final stretch of the regular season.
