Chicago Fire FC II has officially turned one of its brightest academy success stories into a professional contract.
The club announced Thursday that 18-year-old midfielder Damyan Villanueva has signed an MLS NEXT Pro contract through the 2027-28 season, with Chicago Fire II holding club options for the 2028-29 and 2029-30 seasons.
For Villanueva, the deal is the latest step in what has quickly become a breakout year.
The Crestwood, Illinois, native played a major role for Chicago Fire II in 2026, appearing in 27 matches with 16 starts while producing a team-leading 13 goal contributions.
That production helped turn Villanueva from an academy prospect into a legitimate professional player — and his development has also earned him his first opportunity with the U.S. Youth National Team.
Villanueva Made His MLS NEXT Pro Opportunity Count
Chicago Fire II first introduced Villanueva to MLS NEXT Pro when he was just 15 years old, making his professional debut against FC Cincinnati 2 on July 28, 2024.
He made two appearances that season.
Two years later, the midfielder has become one of the most productive young players on the Chicago roster.
After leading Chicago Fire’s U-18 Academy team in goals during the 2025-26 MLS NEXT season, Villanueva carried that attacking production into the professional environment.
He finished the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro season with six goals and seven assists, tying for second on the team in goals while leading the club in assists.
For the youngest roster in MLS NEXT Pro this season, that level of production stands out even more.
His breakthrough came in June when Villanueva scored his first two professional goals in a June 27 match, earning MLS NEXT Rising Star of Matchweek 17 honors.
He wasn’t finished.
One week later, he earned the same recognition again after recording a goal and an assist against Huntsville City FC.
That’s the kind of stretch that can change a young player’s trajectory.
From Academy Prospect to Professional Contract
Chicago Fire Sporting Director Gregg Broughton pointed directly to Villanueva’s development when discussing the signing.
The club challenged the teenager to prove that the qualities he had shown at the MLS NEXT level could translate into professional soccer.
Villanueva answered that challenge.
His 2026 campaign wasn’t simply about putting up numbers. It was about showing that he could consistently contribute against older, more experienced players.
That distinction matters.
MLS NEXT Pro is designed in part to bridge the gap between academy soccer and the professional game, and Villanueva’s progression is a clear example of that pathway working as intended.
The next challenge will be maintaining that trajectory as expectations increase.
U.S. Youth National Team Recognition Follows
Villanueva’s club breakthrough has also opened another door internationally.
He recently received his first U.S. Youth National Team call-up, joining U-19 USMNT head coach Rob Valentino’s squad for an international training camp in Marbella, Spain.
The camp began September 24 and runs through October 6.
For a player who was still competing primarily within the academy pathway not long ago, the progression has been rapid:
Academy standout → MLS NEXT Pro contributor → professional contract → U.S. Youth National Team call-up.
That’s a significant sequence for an 18-year-old midfielder.
And it gives Villanueva another environment in which to test his game against some of the country’s top young players.
What This Means
Chicago Fire II’s decision to commit to Villanueva through 2027-28 gives the midfielder a longer runway to continue developing within the club’s professional structure.
His contract also comes with club options through 2029-30, giving Chicago additional flexibility as it evaluates his progression.
The bigger story, however, is the pathway.
Villanueva joined the Chicago Fire Academy, earned an opportunity with the second team at 15, became one of Chicago Fire II’s leading contributors at 18 and has now earned a professional contract and a national-team opportunity.
That’s exactly the type of progression MLS NEXT Pro can provide when academy development and professional competition connect effectively.
ASN Take
Villanueva’s signing is another reminder that MLS NEXT Pro is becoming an increasingly important proving ground for young players.
Atlanta United 2 has provided a similar platform in Georgia, with Academy products and young professionals using the league to earn bigger opportunities.
Earlier this year, Atlanta United 2 signed Academy midfielder Ignacio Suarez-Couri to an MLS NEXT Pro contract, continuing Atlanta’s own emphasis on moving young players into the professional environment.
That pathway has produced plenty of recent headlines in Atlanta.
Atlanta United 2 reached its first MLS NEXT Pro playoffs in 2026, while Arif Kovac won the Golden Boot with 20 goals and Cameron Dunbar was named MLS NEXT Pro Playmaker of the Year after recording 13 assists.
Villanueva’s story fits into that same larger MLS NEXT Pro development conversation.
The league isn’t just about results on the table. For young players, it’s about proving they belong at the professional level.
Villanueva has done that.
Now comes the next step.
A Bigger Opportunity Awaits
Villanueva enters the next phase of his career with three important pieces already in place: professional experience, a long-term MLS NEXT Pro contract and his first U.S. Youth National Team call-up.
The challenge now is turning a breakout season into sustained progress.
At just 18, there is plenty of room for his game to continue developing.
And if his 2026 season is any indication, Chicago Fire II may have another academy product worth watching closely.
