The Clayton State University women’s soccer team is set to kick off their 2024 season this Thursday, bringing high energy and expectations after an exciting 2023 campaign. The Lakers finished last season with a solid 7-7-4 record and earned a spot in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament for the 12th straight year. With several All-Conference and All-Region selections returning, the team is looking stronger than ever.
In the opening weekend, Clayton State hits the road, traveling to face Delta State on Thursday, followed by a Sunday matchup against Auburn-Montgomery. The Lakers will then return home on September 13 to host West Alabama. Last season, they claimed victories over all three of these opponents, setting the stage for a promising start to the 2024 campaign.
The Lakers are led by Amiah Sprunger-Hightower, a standout forward who led the Peach Belt Conference with 15 goals last season. Sprunger-Hightower, named All-Region and First-Team All-Conference, is primed for another big year as she continues to be a key offensive threat. She’s supported by Chloe Flannaghan, an All-Conference selection from England, and several other returning stars who helped the Lakers score 34 goals in 2023.
On defense, the Lakers will look to Trinity Chastain in goal and a strong backline anchored by Daniela Gularte and Julia Hasenez, who contributed to five shutouts last season. The squad also boasts a promising group of newcomers, including Laila Roberson, Leah Agrell, and Gabriela Martinez Alesci, all expected to make an immediate impact.
As head coach Ross Henderson enters his third season, he’s excited to guide the Lakers in what promises to be an exciting year for the team. With a mix of returning talent and fresh faces, Clayton State is ready to make their mark in the Peach Belt once again.
