Atlanta soccer fans, get ready to celebrate as Clayton State University’s men’s soccer team continues to make waves on the national stage! Four standout Lakers have been named to the prestigious United Soccer Coaches (USC) All-Southeast Region teams, showcasing the talent and determination that’s driving the program to new heights.
On Tuesday, the USC unveiled its honorees, and Lakers fans couldn’t be prouder. Alexis Iturria, Alex Rodriguez, and Othmane Chagour earned spots on the First Team, while Mauricio Uribe secured a well-deserved place on the Third Team. Alexis Iturria: The Playmaker Extraordinaire
Hailing from Hampton, Georgia, Iturria has etched his name into Laker history as one of the most decorated players ever. With six goals and an astounding 14 assists this season—tying for third-most in the nation—he’s been the creative engine behind Clayton State’s attack. Iturria’s efforts propelled the Lakers to their first Elite Eight appearance since 2010, solidifying his legacy as a three-time all-region selection.
Over his stellar career, Iturria racked up 95 points (second in program history) and 36 assists, showcasing his consistency and vision. From earning D2CCA First-Team All-Region honors to being named a Third-Team D2CCA All-American, Alexis has set a standard of excellence that will inspire future Lakers.
Othmane Chagour: The Defensive Wall
Straight out of Casablanca, Morocco, Chagour anchored a defensive unit that was nothing short of sensational. The Lakers conceded just 21 goals, the fewest since 2019, and held opponents to one or fewer goals in 16 of 21 matches, including six shutouts. Chagour even chipped in offensively with two goals and an assist.
As a First-Team All-Peach Belt honoree, Chagour’s rock-solid performances made him a nightmare for opposing forwards, proving that defense truly wins championships.
Alex Rodriguez: The Goal Machine
From Valladolid, Spain, Rodriguez was an unstoppable force this season, leading the team with 11 goals and eight assists. Crowned the PBC Offensive Player of the Year, he delivered clutch moments, including two goals in the Sweet 16 upset of #1 Limestone and an assist in the Elite Eight showdown against Lynn.
Rodriguez’s knack for delivering in high-pressure situations earned him the PBC Gold Ball Award for most goals in the conference, along with first-team All-Conference and D2CCA All-Region honors. His five match-winning goals were pivotal to the Lakers’ success, making him a fan favorite in Atlanta’s soccer community.
Mauricio Uribe: The Guardian of the Net
Miami’s own Uribe stood tall in goal, consistently rising to the occasion when it mattered most. His highlight reel includes nine saves against Limestone in the Sweet 16 and seven saves against Converse in the Round of 32. With six shutouts and a goals-against average of 0.87, Uribe was a fortress between the posts.
Uribe’s career stats are equally impressive, with the fifth-best GAA in program history at 1.04 goals per game. This season, he added a First-Team All-PBC nod and Second-Team D2CCA All-Region selection to his growing list of accolades.
