The United Soccer Coaches (USC) unveiled its 2024 Men’s Soccer All-America selections and final Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, with the Clayton State University Lakers earning significant accolades. The Lakers celebrated three All-America selections and capped their season ranked fifth in the nation, the program’s highest ranking in a USC poll since 2011.
All-America Selections
For the first time in program history, two Lakers were named to the USC All-America First Team:
- Alexis Iturria (First Team, Midfielder):
The Hampton, Georgia native delivered a remarkable season, scoring six goals and providing 14 assists, tied for third-most nationally and in Clayton State history. Iturria’s 26 points and 65 shots showcased his dynamic offensive abilities, while his 1,744 minutes played underscored his durability. Over his illustrious career, he amassed 95 points (tied for second all-time) and 36 assists (second all-time) for the Lakers.- Additional Honors: USC First-Team All-Southeast Region, D2CCA First-Team All-Region, First-Team All-PBC, Third-Team D2CCA All-America.
- Alex Rodriguez (First Team, Forward):
The Valladolid, Spain native led the Lakers with 11 goals and eight assists, earning PBC Offensive Player of the Year honors. Rodriguez delivered in clutch moments, including two goals in a Sweet 16 overtime victory against #1 Limestone and an assist in the Elite Eight against Lynn. His 30 points and five match-winning goals were pivotal in the Lakers’ historic season.- Additional Honors: PBC Gold Ball Award, First-Team All-Conference, D2CCA and USC All-Region selections.
- Othmane Chagour (Third Team, Defender):
A native of Casablanca, Morocco, Chagour anchored a stellar defensive unit that conceded only 21 goals, the fewest since 2019. The Lakers held opponents to one or fewer goals in 16 of 21 matches, including six shutouts. Chagour also contributed offensively with two goals and an assist.- Additional Honors: First-Team All-PBC, USC First-Team All-Southeast Region.
Team Achievements
The Lakers advanced to their first Elite Eight since 2010, finishing the season 5th in the final USC Coaches’ Poll, trailing only Lynn, Charleston, and two others. Their postseason success included a thrilling Sweet 16 victory over top-ranked Limestone and a deep NCAA tournament run.
This historic season marks a resurgence for Clayton State, solidifying their position as one of the top programs in Division II soccer.
