The Clayton State University women’s soccer team delivered a thrilling and memorable 2024 season, marking a remarkable turnaround from 2023. Under the guidance of Coach Henderson, the Lakers demonstrated resilience, growth, and a hunger for success that has set the stage for a promising future.
The Lakers closed out their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Georgia College in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Quarterfinals. Despite the narrow defeat, the team’s overall performance was exceptional. For just the second time since 2002, Clayton State went undefeated at home, boasting an impressive 3-0-5 record at Laker Field. Their 5-3-1 record on the road solidified their standing as a formidable competitor, earning them a fifth-place finish in the highly competitive PBC behind Columbus State, North Georgia, Flagler, and Georgia College.
Record-Breaking Season and Stellar Standouts
Coach Henderson’s squad not only earned the most wins in program history since 2019 but also tied the program record for the fewest losses in a single season. The team’s 40 goals scored and their airtight defense, which allowed just 16 goals—the fewest since 2005—were testaments to their balanced and disciplined approach.
The Lakers were anchored by standout performances on both ends of the pitch. Offensive dynamo Carrie Consolino had a historic season, finishing second in the nation with 19 goals. Her achievements earned her United Soccer Coaches (USC) and D2CCA All-Region honors, as well as the prestigious D2CCA All-America recognition—the first Laker to achieve this feat since Maria Marti Bartis in 2014.
Joining her in the offensive spotlight was Amiah Sprunger-Hightower, who netted 11 goals, the second-highest on the team. Meanwhile, defenders Trinity Chastain and Daniela Gularte were instrumental in the Lakers’ six shutouts and defensive record, ensuring opponents had little room to operate.
Academic Excellence Shines Bright
The Lakers also excelled in the classroom, with seven players selected for the Peach Belt Conference Team of Academic Distinction. Chastain, Samantha Giel, Gularte, Chloe Flannaghan, Madison Nicolas, Jessica Fuentes, and Lydia Madrid Sobreira were all honored for their academic achievements. Additionally, Chastain, Fuentes, and Nicolas were recognized as CSC Academic All-District selections, further emphasizing the team’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

With such a strong foundation built in 2024, the future is brighter than ever for Clayton State women’s soccer. Coach Henderson has guided this team to new heights, and the Lakers’ blend of athletic and academic success proves they are a program on the rise.
