It was a tough loss for Atlanta United 2 as they fell to Detroit City FC, on April 9, 2022 by a score of 4-0 in the USL (United Soccer League).

Saturday’s first-ever match between Atlanta United 2 and Detroit City FC occurred at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, GA. Nelson Orji is a 19-year-old Nigerian defender who joined Atlanta United 2 after being a part of the FC Porto Academy, where he played U-19. Orji made his first appearance for Atlanta, while Cristiano Bruletti and Emenike Nwogu made their professional debuts.

USL Championship newcomers Detroit City FC has started the league in an outstanding way, winning its first home match 1-0 on March 19, 2022, against Charleston Battery and going undefeated in its two games since then.

When Detroit’s Rhys Williams gained possession of a loose ball near Atlanta’s goal, he was able to pass it quickly to Antoine Hoppenot, who then headed the ball into the goal, increasing the lead 2-0.

Detroit City FC added to its lead in the 42nd minute of the game. Matt Lewis sent a ball up the sideline, allowing Hoppenot to flick it to Pato Botello Faz for an easy score.

Atlanta had a chance to score in the 60th minute when Jonathan Villal almost scored his first professional goal from 20 yards out. Detroit finished Atlanta off in the 78th minute with a shot in the net by substitute Michael Bryant, ending the match 4-0.

Atlanta United 2, with a record of 2-4-0, for a total of 6 points,  travels next to Indianapolis, Indiana, to take on Indy Eleven.
