STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern women’s soccer team took flight in the second half, securing their first win of the season with a 2-0 triumph over Kennesaw State at Tormenta Stadium on Thursday evening.
With the home crowd behind them, the Eagles dominated from the start, outshooting the Owls 12-3 in the first half. Despite the pressure, neither team could find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes. But the breakthrough finally came in the 61st minute when Erin Wilkins delivered a corner kick that led to a scramble in front of the goal. Smith Cathey’s persistence paid off as Addison Comer got the final touch to put Georgia Southern on the board.
Just three minutes later, the Eagles struck again. Another corner from Wilkins found Claire Casey, who expertly flicked it to Cathey, and she made no mistake, heading it home for her third goal of the season, doubling the lead.
Georgia Southern’s relentless attack saw them finish with a 21-6 shot advantage, while goalkeeper Katie Oakley stood tall with three crucial saves to earn the shutout. KSU’s Charlee Bernal did her best to keep the Owls in the game with six saves, but the Eagles’ set-piece prowess proved too much.
Head coach Chris Adams praised his team’s organization and determination, especially after their long trip back from Hawai’i. “We just had to make sure we were organized and not leave any gaps,” Adams said. “We found our legs in the second half, pressed forward, and capitalized on our set pieces. It was a great performance to stay organized and secure the win.”
