Las Vegas, NV – The remarkable season for the Emory University women’s soccer team came to a bittersweet end Friday night as the Eagles fell 2-0 to William Smith in the national semifinals at Peter Johann Memorial Field on the campus of UNLV.
Despite a dominant first-half performance, where the Eagles outshot the Herons 10-2, Emory couldn’t convert their early momentum into goals. Sophomore Kaitlyn Nimmer and Emily Woodall led the charge with close chances, but William Smith’s defense and goalkeeper held firm, leaving the Eagles scoreless heading into the break.
William Smith capitalized on their opportunities in the second half. Just two minutes into the restart, Nell Dwyer broke the deadlock with a perfectly timed header off a cross from Ruth Hotaling, sneaking it past Emory’s goalkeeper, Sophia Garcia. The Herons extended their lead in the 59th minute when Kirsten Nelson collected a bouncing ball in the box and slotted it home for her first collegiate goal, giving William Smith the cushion they needed.
Undeterred, the Eagles fought valiantly to mount a comeback. Nimmer had a close attempt turned away in the 67th minute, followed by a powerful Woodall header that rattled off the crossbar. Woodall continued to press but saw her final shot of the night saved by the Herons’ keeper.
Statistically, Emory dominated the game with an 18-8 advantage in total shots and a 4-3 edge in shots on goal, but the Herons’ efficiency in front of the net proved decisive.
While the defeat stings, it marks the conclusion of a historic season for Emory women’s soccer. The Eagles posted a stellar 14-4-4 overall record and reached the NCAA Final Four for only the second time in program history, showcasing their growth and determination throughout the year.
As for William Smith, they move on to the national title game on Sunday, December 8th, where they will face WashU in pursuit of championship glory.
