Atlanta United Welcomes First-Ever Albanian Player: Enea Mihaj
It’s not every day a new country is represented in Atlanta United’s First Team, but Enea Mihaj made history as the first Albanian national to play for the 5-Stripes. The defender brings a strong European pedigree and leadership experience to Atlanta, and he’s ready to make his mark both on the pitch and in the city he now calls home.
Mihaj arrived from FC Famalicão in Portugal, where he not only earned regular starts but was also named club captain. Before that, he came through the ranks in Greece and competed in the UEFA Conference League with PAOK, further shaping his professional journey.
Getting to Know Enea Mihaj
In a recent sit-down interview with Atlanta United host Joe Freihofer, Mihaj shared insights into his background, mindset, and what he hopes to bring to the club and its fans.
On his earliest football memory:
“It was at a small academy, playing five-a-side. I played every position. It was fun.”
On teammates he’s connecting with:
“Everyone’s been friendly. All of the guys are really close to me.”
If not a footballer?
“Something related to nature. I relate to nature a lot.”
On growing up in Greece:
“The players work hard and really want to succeed. It shaped me.”
What excites him about living in the U.S.:
“Understanding people’s lives here—and exploring parks in Atlanta.”
Family Life and Football
Mihaj recently became a father, balancing family life with adjusting to life in a new country and new club. He credits his wife for being his rock during the transition.
“It’s tough, but my wife is doing great. I try to help by playing with my son when I’m home.”
He also shared that his young son is already a key motivator in his career.
“The one thing I can’t live without? My kid.”
Football Rituals, Language Skills, and Leadership
- Pre-match rituals: Reading, analysis, and visualization of the match ahead
- Go-to meals: Chicken and pasta on matchday; sweet potatoes and protein the night before
- Languages: Fluent in Greek, Albanian, Portuguese, and English; understands some Spanish

“Because in the hard moments I was there, and in the good moments I was behind the club.”
His idols:
“Kobe Bryant and Sergio Ramos.”

Mihaj beams with pride when discussing his Albanian heritage:
“We’re a small country in numbers, but we always look to get better. My parents moved to give me a better life, and that makes me proud.”
He recalls playing against Poland and Italy as highlights of his international career, calling the latter “unbelievable,” even though he didn’t start.
Advice to His Younger Self
“Analyze your games. Watch and learn from football. Always look to improve.”
And when asked what he wants Atlanta United fans (17s) to know about him:
“That I’m here to give everything for them and for the club—to make them proud.”
