EU Consular Corps marks World War I Centennial
ATLANTA (December 4) – The EU Consular Corps in Atlanta are presenting two special events commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I and the Christmas Truce, when soldiers entered No Man’s Land to exchange Christmas gifts, bury the fallen and play a game of soccer.
On Tuesday, December 9, Emory University British Professor Patrick Allitt will deliver a special lecture highlighting the historical significance of World War I and the Christmas Truce.
On Saturday, December 13, a re-enactment of the Christmas Truce match will take place at Emory Woodruff PE Center Field. President of the newly awarded Major League Soccer team MLS Atlanta, Darren Eales, will take the field for team Britain. MLS owner Arthur Blank will present the winner’s trophy.
This event is part of Football Remembers Week, a partnership between Premier League, Football Association and the British Council to engage fans about what took place in Flanders on Christmas Day 1914. Over 20 countries are participating in #FootballRemembers activities, including three cities in the US – Atlanta, New York City, and Washington, DC.
