On Saturday, Dec. 14, Silverbacks Park in DeKalb County will host the 22nd annual Father Christmas Cup (FXCup), bringing together 84 youth and adult soccer teams to honor families of fallen military, first responders, and the Atlanta soccer community.
A Tradition of Generosity and Community
Founded in 2003 by Stephen O’Hare, the FXCup has grown from a modest two-team gathering to a vibrant annual event, raising nearly $100,000 in 2023 alone. Over 90% of the funds support its beneficiaries, including families in need and the Rick’s Ref Scholarship Fund, which helps 20 local referees cover recertification and equipment costs.
The scholarship honors Rick Johnson, a passionate player and advocate for fair play who passed away unexpectedly in 2021. “Rick always wanted fairness in the game,” said his wife, Madelaine Johnson, reflecting on his legacy.
More Than Just Soccer
The day begins with youth matches in the morning and adult games in the afternoon. At midday, a moving memorial ceremony pauses play to honor those who have passed. Bagpipers from the Atlanta Pipe Band open the gathering, followed by a trumpet performance of “Taps” and a heartfelt rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
While the event is rooted in remembrance, it’s also a celebration of joy and community spirit. Players don Santa hats and elf socks, while spectators enjoy raffles, festive treats, and the camaraderie of Atlanta’s soccer family.
A Story That Began in a Pub
The FXCup was inspired by a conversation among friends over beers in 2003. Reflecting on the sacrifices of those serving in Iraq, O’Hare and his friends remembered the 1914 World War I Christmas truce, during which British and German soldiers played a soccer match.
From that spark, the FXCup was born. The first event featured two teams collecting donations for a soldier’s family. Since then, the tournament has steadily grown, welcoming more teams, supporters, and beneficiaries each year.
Stories of Impact
In 2021, the FXCup provided solace to Erica Rountree, whose husband Chris and daughter Libby tragically died in a car accident. Chris, a soccer referee, and Libby, an avid player, were deeply involved in the sport.
“When something devastating happens, you can feel incredibly alone,” Rountree said. “FXCup showed us that we weren’t forgotten and that we had a community rallying around us.”
How to Participate
The FXCup invites everyone to join—whether by playing, watching, or donating. “Even if you don’t play soccer, you can still come, buy a raffle ticket, or make a donation,” O’Hare said.
