ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Looks like FC Barcelona has already found a new star after the departure of Argentine superstar striker Lionel Messi.
Barcelona has signed teen soccer star Ansu Fati to a new contract until 2027.
Sources said the contract has a release clause of €1 billion ($1.16 billion) for the 18-year-old forward.
Fati is seen as key to the club’s future in the post-Messi era and has even inherited the No. 10 shirt previously worn by the Argentina star.
Sources also revealed that the player’s new deal will include a staggered salary which increases each season. The release clause in the contract, meanwhile, has risen to a club-record €1bn, matching the figure included in the terms signed by young midfielder Pedri recently.
Ansu’s previous contract — which was negotiated by his ex-agent, Rodrigo Messi — included an option to extend by two years, but there was confusion over whether Barca would be able to execute it unilaterally.
On October 17, Barcelona rallied and beat the visiting Valencia 3-1 at Camp Nou, Barcelona.
Fati, Memphis Depay, and Philippe Coutinho provided the winning goals for Barcelona who is currently struggling with the departure of Messi.
Barcelona hopes to extend their winning streak to two when they host Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League on October 20.
Last month, Last week, Cadiz made headlines after they held Barcelona to a 0-0 draw at the Nuevo Mirandilla.
Coming into this game, Barcelona was expected to win over Cadiz but their opponent showed them that they are not a pushover team.
