ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The losing woes of FC Barcelona in important matches continues.
Boca Juniors beat Barcelona on penalties to claim the inaugural Diego Maradona Cup in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
The match, which took place at Mrsool Park in Riyadh, was arranged to honor the late Maradona, who passed away on Nov. 25 last year.
Maradona, considered one of the best players to ever play the game, played for both Barca and Boca in a professional career that ran from 1976 to 1997.
He played twice for Boca, between 1981 and 1982 and again between 1995 and 1997. He joined Barca from Boca in 1982, spending two seasons with the Spanish club before signing for Napoli.
Last December 8, after 18 years of being a regular competitor in the Champions League group stage, Barcelona will miss that chance this year.
This scenario emerged after Barcelona suffered a 0-3 defeat at the hands of FC Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena.
With the win, Bayern wraps up a perfect group stage with 18 points from six games and a goal difference of 22-3.
Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané handed Bayern a two-goal lead in the first half, Jamal Musiala rounding off the scoreline after the hour mark.
The defeat also means that Barça will instead be playing in the Europa League when Europe returns in early 2022.
For defeat in the south of Germany coupled with Benfica’s 2-0 victory over Dynamo Kyiv means it will be the Portuguese side that will be joining Bayern in the last sixteen of Europe’s premier club competition.
