What is up, Atlanta soccer family!
Take a second and think about where you were the last time the men’s FIFA World Cup touched down on American soil. If you were living in East Cobb back in 1994, you might remember a very different sports landscape. There was no social media, no instant streaming, and local soccer culture was just finding its footing.
For Mike Holmes, an enthusiastic soccer fan who now calls East Cobb home, 1994 was the spark that changed everything. As a 14-year-old tracking the tournament on a paper bracket pinned to his bedroom wall, he convinced his family to swap Fourth of July fireworks for a Round of 16 watch party between the USMNT and Brazil. The U.S. fell short 1-0 that day, but Holmes was entirely hooked.
Fast forward over thirty years. This summer, the absolute pinnacle of the beautiful game returns to the United States, and Holmes’s adopted hometown is stepping directly into the global spotlight.
Eight Super Bowls Under One Roof
The 2026 edition—co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico—is the biggest one yet, expanding to feature 48 competing nations. Out of all the host cities across North America, Atlanta scored big. We are hosting eight massive matches, kicking off with a group stage showdown on June 15 and culminating in a historic semifinal match on July 15.
To put the sheer scale of this event into perspective, local stakeholders and FIFA organizers are comparing these eight matches to hosting eight individual Super Bowls back-to-back.

Because of strict FIFA sponsorship guidelines, our beloved Mercedes-Benz Stadium will temporarily adopt the tournament moniker “Atlanta Stadium.” But make no mistake—the roaring energy inside those gates will be 100% pure A-Town. William Pate, president of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, notes that the global broadcast exposure is a massive opportunity to showcase Atlanta on the international stage, luring both leisure travel and major international businesses to our city.
A Rich Soccer Tapestry Coming Full Circle
For some critics across the country, Atlanta’s rise as a soccer powerhouse seemed to happen overnight when Atlanta United smashed MLS attendance records in 2017. But real local fans know our roots run deep.
The city’s very first professional sports title actually belonged to the Atlanta Chiefs, who lifted the North American Soccer League championship trophy all the way back in 1968. Today, our soccer culture is thriving more than ever. Beyond the incredible atmosphere our supporters bring to MLS matchdays, the city is preparing to welcome a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) franchise in 2028, and the U.S. Soccer Federation’s brand-new headquarters is opening right down the road in Fayette County.
For fans like Holmes, this summer is a beautiful full-circle moment. He now has a 13-year-old son of his own, and he’s excited to watch him fall in love with the tournament the exact same way he did three decades ago.
“There’s just something different about cheering on the USA in the World Cup,” Holmes says. “Baseball and football are great sports, but when it comes to the international stage, soccer is still the biggest thing by far.”
