ATHENS, GA – In front of a lively home crowd at the Turner Soccer Complex, the Georgia Bulldogs secured a 2-0 victory over Samford on Thursday evening. Upperclassmen forwards Tori Penn and Margie Detrizio provided the firepower, each finding the back of the net to help the Bulldogs claim their third win of the season.
Georgia Takes Control Early:
It didn’t take long for Georgia to make their mark on the game. In the 12th minute, Margie Detrizio set up Tori Penn with a smooth assist, sending Penn into the box where she calmly slotted the ball past the diving Samford keeper to give Georgia a 1-0 lead.
Just ten minutes later, Detrizio switched from playmaker to goal-scorer, netting her team-leading fifth goal of the season and scoring in her second consecutive match. With that, the Bulldogs were up 2-0 and in full control of the game.
A Shutout for the Record Books:
Junior goalkeeper Jordan Brown was a wall for Georgia, recording six saves and earning the 16th clean sheet of her career. Samford was unable to generate much offensively, with Georgia’s defense keeping them from even attempting a corner kick.
Room for Improvement Despite the Win:
Despite the victory, head coach Keidane McAlpine acknowledged the need for more offensive creativity. “Anytime you get a win, anytime you get a shutout, you have to take it,” said McAlpine. “But I don’t think we created enough chances, and it wasn’t the most exciting match for our fans.”
Penn echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for more effective problem-solving on the field. “When a team sits back in a low block, we’ve got to figure out how to break through,” she said. “We could’ve created more chances, but a win is a win.”
Looking Ahead:
Georgia (3-2-1) will stay at home for their next challenge, as they take on Washington State this Sunday, September 15, at 1 p.m., looking to notch their fourth win of the season.
