Georgia soccer midfielder Honoka Hamano has been rewarded for one of the biggest performances of the Bulldogs’ young season.

The senior from Tokyo was named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week Monday, sharing the honor with South Carolina midfielder Reese Slater.

The recognition comes after Hamano scored Georgia’s goal in a 1-1 draw against No. 2 Vanderbilt last Thursday, helping the Bulldogs earn one of the biggest results in program history.

It is also Georgia’s first SEC weekly honor of the season.

Hamano Delivers Against No. 2 Vanderbilt

Hamano needed only 15 minutes to make her impact felt against Vanderbilt.

The Tokyo native received a setup from teammates Mya Townes and Kiera Staude before unleashing a powerful strike from beyond the 18-yard box.

The shot beat the Vanderbilt goalkeeper and gave Georgia an early 1-0 advantage.

For Hamano, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The goal proved especially important against a Vanderbilt team entering the match ranked No. 2 nationally.

Georgia ultimately saw the Commodores equalize, but the Bulldogs held on for a 1-1 draw, securing the program’s second-ever result against a top-two opponent.

That result gave Hamano’s performance even more weight.

First SEC Honor of the Season

The SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week award is the first conference weekly recognition for Georgia this season.

Hamano’s selection also highlights the attacking contribution she has provided during the opening stretch of the campaign.

Her fourth goal leads the Bulldogs, and her ability to create danger from distance gives Georgia another dimension in the attacking third.

Against Vanderbilt, that quality produced an early breakthrough and put the Bulldogs in position to earn a historic result.

For a Georgia team beginning SEC play against one of the nation’s top programs, having experienced players such as Hamano step forward could prove important as the conference schedule continues.

Hamano and Georgia Turn Toward Oklahoma

There won’t be much time for Georgia to celebrate the Vanderbilt result.

The Bulldogs return to the Turner Soccer Complex Friday, Sept. 18, when they host Oklahoma at 6:30 p.m.

Oklahoma enters the match with a 7-0-2 overall record and a 1-0-0 SEC mark, giving Georgia another difficult conference test.

Admission is free.

The first 500 fans in attendance will also receive a Georgia soccer replica jersey at halftime, adding another incentive for Bulldog fans to make the trip.

The match will stream live on SEC Network+ and ESPN Unlimited.

For Georgia, the challenge is to build on the confidence gained from holding the nation’s No. 2 team to a draw.

And for Hamano, the opportunity is there to continue what has already been a productive start to her senior season.

What This Means for Georgia Soccer

The Vanderbilt draw showed Georgia can compete with the SEC’s best.

Hamano’s goal was a major part of that.

Her ability to strike from outside the box opened the match with Georgia playing from in front, while Townes and Staude provided the combination that created the opportunity.

Now, Hamano enters the next match as a conference player of the week with four goals already to her name.

That’s an important attacking weapon for Georgia as the Bulldogs navigate the SEC schedule.

The conference is unforgiving, and another strong performance against Oklahoma would give Georgia an opportunity to turn Thursday’s historic result into momentum rather than an isolated achievement.

ASN TAKE

Honoka Hamano couldn’t have picked a much better moment to earn her first SEC weekly honor.

Scoring against the No. 2 team in the country is impressive on its own. Doing it 15 minutes into SEC play and helping Georgia secure a historic result makes the recognition even more meaningful.

The Bulldogs now have a clear opportunity in front of them.

They’ve shown they can hang with one of the nation’s best. The next step is proving they can consistently turn those performances into results throughout the SEC schedule.

Hamano will be a major part of that equation.

With four goals already leading Georgia, the senior midfielder has established herself as one of the Bulldogs’ most important attacking threats.

Now the question is whether she can carry that momentum into Friday’s matchup with Oklahoma.
