The Georgia Southern men’s soccer team gave a valiant effort on Sunday, pushing #10 West Virginia to the edge before falling 3-2 in a thrilling Sun Belt Conference Tournament Quarterfinals clash. Unlike their earlier season meeting, the Eagles’ defense stood firm in the opening half, holding the Mountaineers scoreless and seizing the momentum.
In the 35th minute, the Eagles struck first off a corner from Massimo Caruso, finding Zach Martin, who flicked it sharply into the net to put Georgia Southern on the board. Just a minute later, the Eagles earned a penalty kick following a foul in the box, and although Alistair Danjon’s initial shot was saved, Martin was there to clean it up, completing his brace and propelling Georgia Southern to a 2-0 lead. This was Martin’s second two-goal game of the season, a crucial feat against the Mountaineers.
The second half saw West Virginia rally, with the Mountaineers scoring three unanswered goals to claim the win. A penalty in the 49th minute started the comeback, followed by a goal from Carlos Hernando in the 61st, and the game-winner from Sun Belt Player of the Year Sergio Ors Navarro.
Despite West Virginia’s 20-6 shot advantage and 11 corner kicks, the Eagles kept the game close, with both teams managing four shots on target. Georgia Southern concludes a landmark season that included their first postseason appearance in four years, the program’s best-ever start, a top-25 RPI ranking, and a high-scoring offense not seen since 2011.
