Holmes Scores, but Eagles Can’t Overcome Dukes’ Second-Half Surge
Despite a valiant effort and a standout goal from Ryan Holmes, the Georgia Southern men’s soccer team couldn’t hold off a strong James Madison squad, falling 3-1 on Tuesday, October 15th. The Dukes (6-1-5, 2-0-2 SBC) capitalized on key moments to hand the Eagles (5-3-3, 1-2-1 SBC) their second conference loss of the season.
James Madison wasted no time applying pressure, racking up three shots in the opening minutes. Nate Martinez came up with a crucial sliding save early on, but in the 8th minute, a corner kick from Yanis Lelin slipped through Martinez’s grasp, giving the Dukes an early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles responded with resilience. After settling into the match, Harvey Sarajian found some magic in the 29th minute, threading a pass to Ryan Holmes, who blasted a low shot from outside the box into the back corner of the net to equalize. For Holmes, it was his 10th goal of the season, securing his spot as second in the Sun Belt Conference scoring chart.
Both teams went into halftime tied 1-1, though James Madison held an 8-3 advantage in shots and kept the Eagles from earning a single corner kick. The second half started with a balanced back-and-forth, but the Dukes reclaimed the lead in the 65th minute when Kevin Larsson scored to make it 2-1. Just a minute later, Larsson netted a penalty kick, earning a brace and putting the game out of reach for Georgia Southern.
The Eagles pushed hard in the final minutes, firing off four more shots and earning some corner kicks, but they couldn’t close the gap. The Dukes finished the night with 12 shots (six on target) compared to the Eagles’ eight (two on target). Martinez made three saves in goal for Georgia Southern, and both teams finished with 12 fouls, though the Eagles managed to avoid any bookings for the first time since last season.
Next up, Georgia Southern continues their home stand with a highly anticipated rivalry clash against Georgia State on Friday, October 18th, as part of a soccer doubleheader. The men’s match kicks off at approximately 7:30 PM, following the women’s match at 5 PM and a special ceremony honoring Bo Pitts.
