Georgia Southern Soccer Makes History With Defensive Masterclass in 1-0 Win Over Stetson

STATESBORO, GA — The Georgia Southern men’s soccer team continues to rewrite history this season, claiming a hard-fought 1-0 win over Stetson on Tuesday night at Eagle Field. With the victory, the Eagles (3-0-1) have now logged four consecutive clean sheets for the first time in program history.

A first-half goal from Ricky Louis, paired with a lockdown defensive performance, was all Georgia Southern needed to extend their unbeaten streak and further cement their place as one of the top defensive sides in the region.

Quick Strike from Louis Sets the Tone Early

It didn’t take long for the Eagles to get on the board. In the 9th minute, sophomore Emil Seedorff made a decisive run through the midfield before slipping a ball into the box for Louis. The striker spun around his defender and fired low into the corner of the net — his second goal of the season and a highlight-reel finish for the home crowd.

Louis previously scored the Eagles’ season-opening goal at Charlotte, and Tuesday’s strike further showcased his evolution into a reliable front-line threat.

Defensive Wall Shuts Down the Hatters

Georgia Southern’s defense was the real MVP of the night. Goalkeeper Nate Martinez had one save, but it was a critical diving stop in the 63rd minute that kept the Eagles in the lead. Stetson managed just six shots all game, with only one on target.

The Eagles’ backline, led by senior Edan Sears, denied any serious threat in the final third. Sears even forced a crucial goal kick in the waning moments to close out the clean sheet.

“Everyone has been involved, whether it’s those starting or on the bench,” said Sears. “We defended as a whole team, which I think makes the job a lot easier.”

This marks Martinez’s fourth clean sheet of 2025 and the 11th of his career — a number that places him among Georgia Southern’s all-time elite between the posts.

Missed Opportunities Keep Scoreline Tight

Despite the win, Georgia Southern had opportunities to seal the game early. In the 61st minute, Louis was taken down in the box and earned a penalty — but the Stetson keeper guessed correctly, preserving the 1-0 score.

Just before halftime, Louis thought he had a second goal after rounding the keeper, only for the referee to wave it off due to offside.

“We’ve had to keep four clean sheets because we have not scored enough goals to kill games off,” said head coach Lee Squires. “It’s something we know we need to address.”

What This Means for the Eagles

At 3-0-1, Georgia Southern has now established itself as one of the most defensively resolute teams in the region. While scoring remains an area for growth, the Eagles’ compact shape, disciplined midfield, and dominant backline give them a foundation few teams can match.

As they gear up for their next clash against North Florida on Monday, Sept. 8 in Jacksonville, all eyes will be on whether the Eagles can keep their historic shutout streak alive and sharpen their attacking edge.

Your Turn:

Will Georgia Southern continue their shutout streak against UNF? Can Ricky Louis become the breakout scorer the team needs?
