Georgia Southern soccer made an early statement in Sun Belt Conference play.

The Eagles opened league competition Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Arkansas State at Bo Pitts Field, improving to 6-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Sun Belt.

It was Georgia Southern’s first victory in a Sun Belt opener since 2021, and the Eagles dominated the attacking numbers from start to finish.

Georgia Southern finished with a season-high 25 shots, compared with just seven for Arkansas State, while Quinn Wilson recorded two saves to secure her fourth shutout of the season.

The victory also featured first collegiate goals for Caitlin Conroy and Kaitlin Cook.

Meredith Pugh Gives Eagles Early Lead

Georgia Southern needed just 75 seconds to find the breakthrough.

For the second straight match, the Eagles scored early.

Fourth-year midfielder Caitlin Conroy played a ball toward the top of the box for fellow fourth-year player Meredith Pugh, who finished inside the left post for her third goal of the season.

The early goal set the tone for a first half in which Georgia Southern consistently pushed forward.

The Eagles went into halftime leading 1-0 despite holding a commanding 12-2 advantage in shots.

Arkansas State managed to keep the deficit at one, but Georgia Southern continued generating opportunities.

Conroy Gets Her First Collegiate Goal

The Eagles eventually found their second goal in the 58th minute.

Conroy combined with fourth-year forward Addison Comer on a give-and-go before taking the ball into the penalty area.

She then fired a shot past Arkansas State goalkeeper Taylor Sweat and inside the left side of the goal.

The finish gave Georgia Southern a 2-0 lead — and marked Conroy’s first collegiate goal.

After creating the opening goal, Conroy added one of her own to put the Eagles in control.

Cook Adds Another First

Georgia Southern wasn’t finished.

In the 86th minute, third-year forward Kaitlin Cook scored her first collegiate goal to put the match away.

The opportunity came after Olivia Golden made a tremendous run from the back line, creating the chance for Cook to finish from close range.

The late goal completed a 3-0 victory and capped an afternoon in which the Eagles continued to apply pressure even after taking a two-goal lead.

Eagles Dominate the Numbers

Georgia Southern’s attacking advantage was reflected throughout the final statistics.

The Eagles recorded a 25-7 edge in shots, their highest total of the season.

They also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Arkansas State goalkeeper Taylor Sweat made six saves to keep the Red Wolves within reach, while Wilson needed only two saves to preserve Georgia Southern’s fourth shutout of the campaign.

The Eagles were also called for six fouls, compared with eight for Arkansas State.

It was a complete performance from Georgia Southern, particularly considering the team had spent much of the first half creating chances without adding to Pugh’s early goal.

Adams Challenges Eagles at Halftime

Georgia Southern head coach Coach Adams acknowledged that the Eagles could have been more efficient with their decisions in the opening half.

After taking an early lead, Georgia Southern wanted a better response than it had shown in its previous non-conference match at Toledo.

At halftime, Adams challenged the team to make better choices and find simpler passes.

The response came in the second half.

Georgia Southern found favorable matchups, created more efficient attacking opportunities and ultimately turned its control into two additional goals.

The result gave the Eagles exactly the kind of start they wanted to conference play.

Georgia Southern Now Gets Ten Days Off

The Eagles will have some time to recover before returning to action.

Georgia Southern is off for 10 days before its next match, a road trip to face Georgia State on Thursday, Sept. 24.

At 6-1-2 overall and 1-0 in Sun Belt play, the Eagles will enter that matchup with plenty of momentum.

Sunday’s victory showed Georgia Southern can generate sustained attacking pressure, while the defensive unit produced another clean sheet.

Now the Eagles get their first extended break of the schedule before an in-state matchup with Georgia State.

The other storyline is the emergence of Conroy and Cook as new scoring contributors. Both recorded their first collegiate goals, while Pugh continued her strong season with her third goal.
