Eagles Earn First-Ever Win Over a Top-Five Opponent
STATESBORO, GA – In front of nearly 800 roaring fans at Bo Pitts Field, No. 19 Georgia Southern men’s soccer earned the biggest victory in program history Sunday night, taking down No. 4 Marshall by a score of 2-1.
The upset marked just the second time the Eagles have beaten a ranked opponent, and their first-ever victory over a top-five team. With the win, Georgia Southern (8-0-1, 2-0-0 Sun Belt) stretched its unbeaten streak to nine matches and tied the 1997 squad’s record with a seventh straight win.
Head coach Lee Squires called it a defining moment:
“We’ve been building to a moment like this. And it’s nice to get that signature win, which we maybe been lacking. There’s a lot of boxes checked with a win like that for this season, so it feels good.”
First-Half Breakthrough
Marshall, last year’s national runner-up, started the game on the front foot, controlling possession and creating early chances. But it was the Eagles who struck first.
In the 29th minute, sophomore forward Ricky Louis collected a feed from Mitch Picksley on the right side of the box and smashed a low shot off the inside of the left post. The ball ricocheted in, sending the crowd into a frenzy and giving Southern a 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles defended well to close the half, absorbing Marshall pressure while goalkeeper Nate Martinez kept the Herd at bay. At the break, Marshall held a slight 5-4 edge in shots, with both teams committing eight fouls in a hard-fought, physical first 45 minutes.
Second-Half Drama
Marshall found its equalizer in the 68th minute when Keaviano Francis curled a picture-perfect strike into the upper corner from just outside the box. The goal briefly shifted momentum to the visitors.
Just three minutes later, Georgia Southern appeared to retake the lead through Picksley, but the goal was waved off for offsides.
But the Eagles weren’t finished.
In the 79th minute, a long throw-in from Finn Steele skipped through traffic and fell to Louis, who calmly slotted home his second goal of the night — his sixth of the season — to restore the lead.
“Honestly, it feels amazing,” Louis said. “I could feel the energy through the whole motion. We worked for this for about three years, came a long way, so it just feels amazing doing all the hard work.”
Finishing the Job
Marshall pressed desperately in the final 10 minutes, taking three more shots. The best chance came in the 87th minute, when Martinez made a crucial save to preserve the advantage.
The back line, anchored by Steele and captain Josh Ramos, held firm to see out the victory.
The stat sheet showed Marshall with a 15-9 advantage in total shots and a 5-5 split in corners. Despite the intensity, the game remained clean, with just three yellow cards handed out.
What This Means for Georgia Southern
This win isn’t just about the rankings — it’s about validation. Georgia Southern is now firmly atop the Sun Belt Conference standings and has announced itself as a legitimate national contender.
“We knew there was going to be a point where we’d get scored on,” Louis said. “So as great teams, elite teams, how can we react? We played a great 90 minutes.”
With a balanced attack, a lockdown defense, and a red-hot striker in Louis, the Eagles have momentum and belief heading into the toughest stretch of their schedule.
