Broden Beorlegui is making a serious name for himself at Georgia Southern.
The first-year forward was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week after scoring twice in Georgia Southern’s 3-1 victory over No. 15 Old Dominion on Sunday night.
For Beorlegui, it’s the first conference Player of the Week honor of his career.
For the Eagles, it’s another sign that their freshman forward is becoming one of the most productive attacking players in the Sun Belt.
Beorlegui now leads the conference with eight goals this season, while his four game-winning goals are the most in the nation.
Beorlegui Takes Over Against No. 15 Old Dominion
Georgia Southern needed a big performance against a nationally ranked opponent, and Beorlegui delivered.
With the Eagles leading 1-0 at halftime, Old Dominion leveled the match before Georgia Southern regained control.
Beorlegui put the Eagles back in front in the 68th minute, converting a penalty kick to make it 2-1.
But he wasn’t finished.
Sixteen minutes later, Beorlegui received a breakaway opportunity, dribbled past two defenders and calmly placed his shot into the bottom-right corner.
3-1 Georgia Southern.
The second goal sealed the victory and gave Beorlegui his second multi-goal performance of the season.
It also added another game-winning goal to a freshman campaign that is quickly becoming one of the more productive individual seasons in the conference.
A Freshman Leading the Conference in Scoring
Eight goals is impressive on its own.
The context makes Beorlegui’s season even more notable.
His eight goals rank first among all first-year players nationally and lead the Sun Belt.
Even more striking: four of those goals have been game-winners, giving Beorlegui the nation’s highest total in that category.
That production has made him one of the players Georgia Southern’s opponents have to account for every time he steps onto the field.
And it isn’t just about finding the net.
Beorlegui’s goals have repeatedly changed matches.
That’s exactly what Georgia Southern head coach Lee Squires highlighted after the Old Dominion victory.
“Proud of Broden! He’s been a game-winner on more than one occasion this season, and it’s nice for him to gain this recognition.”
Squires also made it clear that Beorlegui isn’t satisfied yet, adding that he expects the freshman to be hungry for more goals against Georgia State.
That matchup now carries another interesting storyline.
Georgia Southern vs. Georgia State Is Next
Beorlegui won’t have to wait long for another opportunity.
Georgia Southern’s next challenge is Georgia State, putting two Georgia programs on opposite sides of a Sun Belt matchup.
For the Eagles, it’s an opportunity to build on the momentum of the Old Dominion win.
For Beorlegui, it’s another chance to add to his conference-leading goal total.
And after scoring twice against the No. 15 team in the country, Georgia State will know exactly who it needs to keep an eye on.
What This Means
Georgia Southern has found a freshman who is already producing at an elite level.
Beorlegui’s numbers aren’t simply good for a first-year player — they currently place him at the top of the Sun Belt scoring chart and among the national leaders in game-winning goals.
That gives Georgia Southern a dangerous attacking weapon as the season moves deeper into conference play.
The bigger question now is whether Beorlegui can maintain that production when opponents begin giving him even more attention.
So far, the answer has been clear.
He’s finding ways to decide games.
And Georgia Southern will need more of that as the Eagles continue their push through the Sun Belt.
ASN Take
This is exactly the kind of college soccer storyline Georgia deserves more attention for.
A freshman forward from Georgia Southern is leading the Sun Belt in goals, leads the nation in game-winning goals and just scored twice against a ranked opponent.
That’s not something that should get lost outside Statesboro.
Beorlegui’s biggest calling card right now is his ability to deliver when the stakes rise. Four game-winning goals in one season tells you something about the timing of his production.
The next test is consistency.
Once a player starts producing at this level, opponents adjust. Defenders pay closer attention. Passing lanes disappear. Opportunities become harder to find.
That’s where Beorlegui’s next chapter becomes interesting.
If he continues finding the back of the net despite those adjustments, Georgia Southern could have one of the conference’s most difficult attacking players to contain.
And for Georgia soccer fans, there’s another reason to keep watching.
The state continues producing players capable of making an impact on the college stage.
Beorlegui is the latest name to add to that conversation.
Eagle Nation Supporting the Program
Georgia Southern is also continuing to build its broader athletic infrastructure through the Eagle Victory Plan, an initiative designed to support Eagle student-athletes and strengthen the university’s ability to compete at the highest level of collegiate athletics.
The initiative includes five giving avenues:
- Capital/Facility Project Funds
- Competitive Excellence Fund
- Eagle Nation Fund
- Erk Russell Fund
- Sport-Specific Agency Fund
According to Georgia Southern, those funds are intended to support initiatives that directly impact programs and student-athletes, including revenue-sharing models and NIL support structures.
For programs such as men’s soccer, that broader investment can play a role in providing student-athletes with the resources and environment needed to compete at a high level.
Up Next
Georgia Southern now turns its attention to Georgia State.
After a 3-1 victory over No. 15 Old Dominion and a Player of the Week honor for Beorlegui, the Eagles will look to carry that momentum into their next Sun Belt test.
And all eyes will be on the freshman forward.
With eight goals already on the season, Beorlegui has put himself in position to make the remainder of the campaign particularly interesting.
How many more can he score?
That’s a question Georgia Southern fans will be watching closely.
