In a tightly contested Sun Belt Conference opener, Coastal Carolina edged past Georgia State with a 1-0 victory on Saturday night in Atlanta. The match was defined by strong defensive displays and a pivotal second-half penalty that sealed the deal for the Chanticleers.
Coastal’s win lifts them to 2-5-0 (1-0-0 Sun Belt) on the season, while Georgia State falls to 3-4-1 (0-1-0 Sun Belt) after a hard-fought battle at home.
The game kicked off with Coastal applying early pressure, as Robert Valdimarsson and Evan Howard took back-to-back shots in the seventh minute. Georgia State’s defense held firm, preventing an early goal and keeping the score level.
The Panthers quickly turned the tide, taking control over the next 30 minutes. They outshot Coastal 4-2 during this stretch, forcing Chanticleers’ goalkeeper Tristan Himes to make two crucial saves.
Despite a late Coastal push in the final five minutes of the first half, the game remained scoreless at the break. Coastal led the shot count 7-4 and had the edge in corners, 4-3.
The game’s defining moment came in the 65th minute when Evan Howard stepped up to the spot and buried a penalty kick, giving Coastal the 1-0 lead. Georgia State pressed for an equalizer but found themselves stifled by Coastal’s organized defense.
Loed Klaasen nearly doubled Coastal’s lead in the 82nd minute with a slick solo run, but his shot was blocked. From there, Coastal managed to hold Georgia State to just one more attempt, locking down the 1-0 victory.
