After scoring his fifth goal of the 2024 campaign on Sunday, Giorgos Giakoumakis became the second player in club history to score five goals in the opening five games of the regular season.

In the 45th minute, Giakoumakis scored from close range after colleague Saba Lobjanidze placed the ball properly.

Giakoumakis had only participated in four of Atlanta United’s five games thus far this season. He was on international duty with his native Greece last weekend, therefore, he was unable to attend Atlanta’s game versus Toronto FC.

In addition, Giakoumakis’ fifth goal of the year put him at the top of the team’s all-time regular-season scoring list. In the MLS regular season, Giakoumakis has now scored 22 goals, breaking a tie with Tito Villalba and Miguel Almiron.

The last player to score five goals in the first five games of an Atlanta United season was Josef Martínez, the team’s all-time top scorer. In 2017 and 2018, the Venezuelan striker accomplished it twice.

Club history was also created on March 17 when Giakoumakis scored his fourth goal of the year and the team’s second goal of the game in a 2-0 shutout over Orlando City SC. Giakoumakis is now second all-time for Atlanta United in goals scored in all competitions after his spectacular volley of a finish.

The striker for Atlanta United is still in the lead in this year’s Golden Boot competition, which is awarded to the MLS scoring leader, thanks to his goal on Sunday against Chicago Fire. Giakoumakis is now tied for second place behind New York Red Bulls player Lewis Morgan (6).
