ATLANTA, GEORGIA—After weeks of search, the Atlanta United FC has finally found a new coach to replace Argentine Gabriel Heinze.
On Thursday, United FC announced the official hiring of former Seattle Sounders assistant coach Gonzalo Pineda as the team’s newest coach.
According to reports, Pineda has signed a three-year contract to coach United FC.
With the hiring of Pineda, Rob Valentino (assistant) and Liam Curran (goalkeeping) will stay on staff, while Pineda will bring on Diego de la Torre, who recently served as head coach at Cafetaleros de Chiapas in Mexico.
Pineda is scheduled to join the team in Atlanta next week with his first training session Thursday.
Valentino will continue to serve as interim coach for the club’s next two games.
United FC president Darren Eales is very happy with the signing of Pineda and excited about the future of the team under Pineda.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Gonzalo as the head coach of Atlanta United,” Eales said.
“Building off an illustrious international playing career, Gonzalo joined Seattle’s coaching staff and played an integral role in the club’s success over the last few years,” Eales added.
The 38-year-old Pineda for his part is very happy with the trust given to him by United FC and he promised to do his best to bring a title to the team.
“This is truly the opportunity of a lifetime and I’m excited to become Atlanta United’s head coach,” Pineda said.
“I want to thank Arthur Blank, Steve Cannon, as well as Darren and Carlos for entrusting me in this position,” Pineda added.
