ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Midfielders Simon Carlson and Iolo Jones each scored goals in Sunday’s game against Liberty to help Georgia State men’s soccer upset the Flames, 2-1, in the team’s third straight home game in Atlanta.

GSU finally scored with Carlson’s unassisted goal in the 47th minute after a scoreless first half in which the Panthers had five shots. With five goals this season, the junior is now tied with Max Wilkins for the team lead. In the 64th minute, GSU increased its advantage when Jones scored the team’s second goal with a helper from midfielder Justin McLean. Jones, a graduate transfer who will play for the Panthers in 2022, scores his first campaign goal.

After Liberty made a last-ditch effort that resulted in a goal being scored by the Flames in the 88th minute, the Panthers finished the game and earned their tenth victory by a score of 2-1. Carlson was the team’s top shooter, with a total of four attempts, and goalkeeper Josue Hangi recorded four saves for the day.

With the victory, GSU improves to 9-2-2 on the year and is now third in the Sun Belt behind No. 2 Kentucky and No. 4 Marshall. On Wednesday, October 19, the Panthers will be back in action at the GSU Soccer Complex for a conference matchup versus fourth-ranked Marshall. The game begins at 7 p.m. ET, with a live feed on ESPN+.
