ATLANTA, GEORGIA–The Georgia State University Panthers men’s soccer team finally barge into the win column of the ongoing 2021 NCAA men’s soccer tournament.
On August 21, the visiting Panthers beat Mercer 1-0 at Betts Stadium.
Panthers’ senior striker George Proctor scored on a penalty kick in the 75th minute to carry his team to victory over the home team.
Proctor, the reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year scored a goal in the third-straight regular season he played. The senior missed the regular-season opener last Thursday after picking up a red card in the conference tournament championship game last season.
A little more than a minute after Proctor’s goal, Mercer’s Dylan Gaither got the Bears’ lone shot on goal, but a save by Gunther Rankenburg kept the home team off the board.
Georgia State (1-1) topped Mercer (1-1) for the sixth-straight time and improved to 39-18-3 all-time in the series.
The Panthers outshot the Bears 13-6, including a 7-1 shots on goal advantage.
The Panthers hope to extend their winning streak to two when they visit the USC Upstate on September 4 in Spartanburg, S.C., for a 7 p.m. match.
