ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The dream of the Georgia State University Panthers men’s soccer team to start on a winning note in the opening week of the NCAA soccer season is off to a good start. The visiting Panthers beat the home team North Florida Ospreys, in Jacksonville, Florida, 1-0 on August 26.

Panthers freshman midfielder Gavin Williams scored the lone and winning goal for the team in their win. The Panthers saw a scoreless first half before the freshman Williams stole the ball at midfield and beat the Ospreys’ goalkeeper for the match’s first and only score.

GSU charted a total of 11 shots with five shots on goal, while the Panthers’ defense limited UNF to nine shots with only one on goal. The Panthers hoped to extend their winning streak to two when they host the dangerous Mercer at the GSU Soccer Complex on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. ET. Based on a recent preseason national poll, the Panthers were ranked number 30 in the United States college soccer teams.
