ATLANTA, GEORGIA— The Georgia State women’s soccer team eked out a 2-2 draw against in-state rival Kennesaw State on Sunday, with junior midfielder Elena Diaz scoring the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.
GSU took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by junior forward Maddie Johnston off an assist from team captain Ana Diaz in the 15th minute. With the goal, Johnston scored two goals for GSU this season. KSU tied the game in the 44th minute, with two minutes remaining in the first half. The score at halftime was 1-1.
KSU scored again in the 70th minute of the second half to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Owls. Jaddah Foos, the Panthers’ junior goalkeeper, made three saves in the second half and seven overall. With 20 shots in the second half, the Panthers secured a late-game equalizer in the 82nd minute when Diaz connected on a penalty kick. GSU finished the game with 26 shots attempted and 10 shots on goal.
The Panthers improved to 2-0-2 on the season with the draw against KSU. GSU comes home next week to face in-state rival UGA on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. ET. The Panthers will host the game at the GSU Soccer Complex.
