The 2024 Concacaf U-20 Championship last saw the U.S. Under-20 Men’s Youth National Team come dangerously close to winning on penalty kicks, but Mexico prevailed 2-1 in the last seconds of extra time on Sunday at Estadio León thanks to a game-winning goal from Diego Ochoa. Mexico took a last-ditch attack with the ball as the clock was running out.
Heriberto Jurado, the midfielder, threw the ball into the box, where Ochoa was waiting to head the ball back into the far-left side of the net for the winning goal.
Thanks mostly to two outstanding stops by goalie Adam Beaudry, the two teams were level at zero goals at the break. Ochoa hit a dangerous cross into the box in the 39th minute that just missed the mark, but forced Beaudry to punch the ball out of danger. After a minute, Elías Montiel of El Tri found himself free at the far-right post and attempted to head a cross toward the net, but Beaudry prevented him from scoring with a diving one-handed save.
In the 52nd minute, striker Nimfasha Berchimas of the United States scored the first goal of the game after dribbling down the pitch for 35 yards and curling the ball into the upper right corner of the net. As the goal was pursued, the USA defense repelled wave after wave of attacks from Mexico.
Mateo Levy headed a Yael Padilla cross into the goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time, however, to give El Tri an equalizer. In extra time, Mexico kept up the pressure, outscoring the United States 11-2, but Beaudry made two more crucial stops to keep the score tied. He made a diving stop to deny Stephano Carillo of Mexico in the 99th minute. He turned away Yael Padilla of El Tri on a free kick a minute later.
After the competition, the USA took home three medals. David Vazquez won the Golden Boot as the competition’s top scorer with three goals, Niko Tsakiris was named the tournament’s best player, and the USA took home the Fair Play Award.
