ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Atlanta United suffered its second defeat on the road after a 1-2 loss to the home team New York Red Bulls, on June 30 at the Red Bull Arena. The visiting United played well in almost 80 minutes of play, but the home team scored two late goals that led to the home team’s victory.
The team’s lone goal in the road defeat came from Venezuelan striker Josef Martinez who scored it in the 63rd minute. The goal is Martinez’s first goal in the Red Bull Arena. Earlier, the team suffered a 1-2 defeat against the home team Toronto FC at the BMO Field 1-2 on June 25.
The home team played superbly in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the first half. The visiting United played with more fire and energy in the second half and cut to tie the score 1-1 after Brazilian scorer Luiz Araújo scored in the 57th minute. However, the home team was able to retake the lead in the 78th minute of the game.
To get back on its feet and start a new winning run, United will continue its road when they face the reigning MLS Cup champion New York City FC on July 3. After their three successive games on the road, the team returns home on July 9 to face Austin FC.
