ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Atlanta United FC star striker Josef Martinez in a recent media interview revealed that he wants to end his career with the team.
As the face of the Major League Soccer franchise since 2017, Martinez hopes United FC management will extend his contract until 2026.
“I don’t want to go to another team and start from scratch,” Martinez said.
“Never say never, but if it were up to me I’d choose [Atlanta] 1,000 times over. This is my home. I’ve said that many times. The club… no one feels the way I feel about this club. I’ve been here since before we had anything. We didn’t even have a home field. So obviously, I want to die here. This is my home. I’ll be here infinitely,” Martinez added.
The year 2021 is a solid MLS year for Martinez.
The past MLS season, Martinez hit 00 career goals for United FC.
The 100 goals achievement is considered the fastest in the history of MLS.
Martinez notched his 100th goal in the 64th minute against D.C. United on September 18, achieve the feat in just 125 club appearances.
Robbie Keane is the next fastest, scoring his first 100 goals for L.A. Galaxy in 156 games.
The club Martínez has scored the most goals (8) against remains Orlando City. He’s scored seven goals against Philadelphia Union and D.C. United.
Goal no. 100 was his second all-time against Inter Miami.
“I want to say thank you to my teammates, the ones that are here and the players that were here before, and everyone working at Atlanta United and also for my city because they mean a lot,” Martínez said.
Martínez is one of the fastest players in the world to score 100 goals with one club, which puts his name on a list that includes some of the sport’s best players. Cristiano Ronaldo scored 100 goals in 105 games for Real Madrid, Luiz Suarez scored 100 goals in 120 games for Barcelona and Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored 100 goals in 124 games for Paris Saint-Germain.
He’s just the 16th player in MLS history to reach 100 goals in all competitions and only the 5th player to do it with one club.
“Six months ago I didn’t know if this would be possible,” Martinez said. “But I play the game because I love to win, and I’m really grateful to have been able to have this opportunity.”
