Before Chattanooga FC and Atlanta United 2 battled at Finley Stadium, Chattanooga took a moment to celebrate one of the people who helped build the club into what it is today.
Juan Hernandez is officially a Chattanooga FC Hall of Legend.
Ahead of Saturday night’s Southeast Division matchup on August 8, the club hosted a special ceremony honoring Hernandez, who became the lone member of the Class of 2026.
For a club built heavily on community, history and connection, the moment was about much more than soccer.
It was about recognizing someone who helped shape Chattanooga FC both on and off the field.

A date that already meant something to Chattanooga FC
August 8 carries special significance in Chattanooga FC history.
On that date in 2015, 18,227 fans packed into the stadium for the NPSL National Championship, setting a national amateur soccer attendance record.
More than a decade later, August 8 once again became a day to celebrate the club’s history.
This time, the spotlight belonged to Hernandez.
The Madrid native spent eight seasons with Chattanooga FC, retiring from playing in 2023 after leaving an unmistakable mark on the organization.
His numbers tell part of the story.
Hernandez ranks second all-time in Chattanooga FC assists with 24 and second all-time in appearances with 127 matches.
But his impact extends far beyond the statistics.
A Hall of Legends built by club builders
Hernandez becomes the latest name added to Chattanooga FC’s Hall of Legends. He follows Sheldon Grizzle, who was inducted in 2025, while the inaugural 2024 class featured club co-founder Thomas Clark, former head coach Bill Elliott and all-time appearance leader Zeca Ferraz. Ferraz, Clark and Grizzle were all on hand for Hernandez’s induction and shared remarks before his plaque was officially unveiled. The moment provided a fitting connection between different generations of Chattanooga FC. Players, coaches, founders and community figures have all played their part in creating the club’s identity.
Hernandez’s legacy didn’t stop when he retired
Perhaps the most impressive part of Hernandez’s Chattanooga story is that his connection with the club didn’t end when his playing career did. He continued contributing to the organization in coaching and youth development. In 2025, Hernandez led Chattanooga FC’s Women’s Premier Soccer League team to the national semifinals. Then in 2026, he helped make even more history. Hernandez led the CFC Youth 09/10G Elite team to Chattanooga’s first-ever national championship in girls’ youth soccer. So while his playing career established him as one of the club’s all-time greats, his work after retirement has helped shape the next generation.
That’s exactly the kind of legacy a Hall of Legends should represent.

When Hernandez’s plaque was unveiled, he reflected on what Chattanooga FC and the community have meant to him. “It’s an honor to be sharing this wall with wonderful people,” Hernandez said. He also highlighted the people who welcomed him from his first days with the club and helped establish the culture that continues to define Chattanooga FC. For Hernandez, the honor wasn’t simply about his own accomplishments. It was about the people who built the club, the city that embraced it and the community that helped connect soccer to something much bigger. That connection is arguably one of Chattanooga FC’s greatest strengths. And Hernandez has been part of it for nearly a decade.
What This Means for Chattanooga FC
Hernandez’s induction is another reminder that Chattanooga FC’s story isn’t built solely around results on the field.
The club’s identity has always been tied to community, culture and continuity.
Hernandez represents all three.
He helped the club as a player, transitioned into coaching and continued developing young players after retiring. Now, his name will permanently sit alongside some of the most influential figures in Chattanooga FC history.
The timing is also fitting.
As the club enters another important stretch of its MLS NEXT Pro season, Chattanooga is simultaneously celebrating where it came from and building toward where it wants to go.
And Hernandez’s journey provides the perfect example.
From player to coach, from club contributor to Hall of Legend, his Chattanooga FC story is still being written.
