Thornell 1

Sekou Thornell, the creative force behind Atlanta-based streetwear label Kitboys Club, is a true creative Swiss Army Knife, blending apparel design, photography, and videography to celebrate his deep-rooted passion for soccer. As a recipient of Adidas’ Honoring Black Excellence award, Sekou is on a mission to “empower the next generation of Black soccer innovators” and democratize the sport for a wider audience.

In this interview, he shares his journey and his perspective on Atlanta’s unique role in the American soccer landscape:

What sparked your love for soccer?

Sekou’s immersion began early, around age three or four, with an all-Black local youth soccer club in Stone Mountain. He found a brotherhood there, many of whom now form the Kit Boys Club. Though the original club folded, Sekou held onto its logo, hoping to one day revive its spirit. He credits his mother, originally from Cape Verde with an affinity for the game, for her unwavering support in driving him to every practice and match.

The birth of Kitboys Club:

After a soccer injury at Clayton State, Sekou’s downtime led him to the world of sneakers, which then evolved into a passion for streetwear and storytelling. Kitboys Club became a creative hub for his friends. He saw the synergy between the flashiness of sports and fashion, noting how athletes use style to build identity.

Atlanta’s influence on Kitboys Club:

For Sekou, representing Atlanta is key. He describes the city’s “swagger” and “underdog” perspective as influential, especially considering soccer’s position in the South. He’s infused the brand with nostalgia for Atlanta’s recent growth in music and entertainment, drawing inspiration from 90s and 2000s streetwear and his father’s background in graffiti and hip-hop.

Atlanta’s role in American soccer’s evolution:

Sekou believes Atlanta is becoming a significant soccer city, especially with the upcoming 2026 World Cup. He points to the infrastructure and the incredible fan support, evidenced by Atlanta United’s championship win with 75,000 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium – a landmark moment for North American soccer.

The unique soccer culture in Atlanta:

He describes Atlanta’s soccer culture as “underground” and “raw,” feeling authentic and drawing people in because it’s somewhat “unfamiliar” in the region, almost like a “local secret.”

How to get involved in Atlanta’s soccer scene:

Sekou offers some great recommendations:

  • Grassroots Leagues: Check out the massive co-ed league at Silverbacks Park, with levels for everyone. Also mentioned are Sons of Pitches and Station Soccer, with Kitboys Club donating to Station Soccer’s free resources for kids.
  • Atlanta United Matches: Experience the highest level and the passion of 75,000 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
  • Soccer Bars & Watch Parties: Join the pub culture at spots like Brewhouse downtown (for Premier League) and Fado Irish Pub.

It’s inspiring to see Sekou Thornell’s vision and his commitment to both streetwear and the growth of soccer in Atlanta! What are your favorite spots to experience soccer culture in the city?
