The 2026 Leagues Cup is set to deliver another month of intense MLS vs. Liga MX competition, with 36 clubs battling from August 4 through September 6 for regional supremacy and a place in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.

Now in its fourth edition, the tournament continues to showcase North America’s biggest club rivalry while introducing a few notable changes, including matches hosted in Mexico for the first time.

What’s New in Leagues Cup 2026?

Leagues Cup 2026 expands its cross-border footprint with four matches scheduled in Mexico, joining host venues across the United States and Canada.

As in the previous edition, every Phase One and Quarterfinal match is guaranteed to feature MLS vs. Liga MX opponents, preserving the tournament’s unique interleague identity.

Every match will stream globally on Apple TV, while select games will also air on FOX Sports, TelevisaUnivision, TSN, and RDS.

The Leagues Cup champion will earn:

The Leagues Cup trophy
Prize money and regional bragging rights
A direct place in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16

The tournament’s runner-up and third-place finisher will also qualify for the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.

Success in the continental competition opens the door to future appearances in the FIFA Club World Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

Leagues Cup 2026 runs for just over one month:

Phase One: August 4–13
Quarterfinals: August 25–27
Semifinals: September 1–2
Third-Place Match: September 6
Final: September 6

Unlike previous years, the MLS and Liga MX regular seasons continue throughout August, with most knockout-round matches played during midweek windows.

How Phase One Works

Each club plays three matches exclusively against teams from the opposite league.

Rather than a combined standings table, MLS clubs compete against fellow MLS teams in one table, while Liga MX clubs compete against Liga MX teams in a separate table.

Results against clubs from the opposite league determine each team’s position within its own league standings.

Points System

There are no draws in Leagues Cup.

If a match is tied after 90 minutes, it immediately proceeds to a penalty shootout.

Teams earn:

3 points for a regulation win
2 points for a penalty shootout win
1 point for a regulation draw followed by a shootout loss

Phase One Tiebreakers

If clubs finish level on points, the following criteria apply:

Goal differential
Regulation wins
Goals scored
Goals conceded

The top four MLS clubs and top four Liga MX clubs advance to the quarterfinals.

Knockout Round Format

Quarterfinal matchups remain entirely interleague:

MLS No. 1 vs. Liga MX No. 4
MLS No. 2 vs. Liga MX No. 3
MLS No. 3 vs. Liga MX No. 2
MLS No. 4 vs. Liga MX No. 1

From the semifinals onward, league affiliation no longer matters, with the remaining four clubs competing in a standard single-elimination bracket.

Every knockout match tied after regulation heads directly to penalties.

Nashville SC’s Phase One Schedule

One of the tournament’s most intriguing schedules belongs to Nashville SC, which hosts all three Phase One matches at GEODIS Park:
