ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Leaving his home country of Argentina during the pandemic to play for Atlanta United FC on September 22, 2020, is not an easy journey for 25-year-old Argentine midfielder Marcelino Moreno.
But after his winning goal on May 15 that carried the United to a 1-0 dramatic win against the visiting CF Montreal, with tears in his eyes, Moreno realizes that his decision to try his luck in America is all worth it.
United earlier acquired Moreno from Club Atletico Lanús of the Argentine Superliga for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Asked about his winning goal after the game, the humble Moreno refused to take personal credit instead he pointed their superb team play that leads to that last-minute goal.
“As a group, we played a great game tonight and we deserved the victory,” Moreno said.
United head coach Gabriel Heinze for his part expressed joy at the winning goal of his player whom he considers a sentimental person.
“After so many tries, it happens. I’m happy for him,” Heinze said.
Goalkeeper and club captain Brad Guzan also praised Moreno for his willingness to take the tough shot for the sake of their team.
“That shows his commitment to the group and the team, but shows his willingness to get in the box and his desire to want to score,” Guzan said.
