The legendary Carli Lloyd of the US women’s national team revealed she and her husband, Brian Hollins, are expecting their first child.
The 41-year-old Lloyd earned 316 USWNT appearances, ranking second only to Kristine Lilly’s 354, during which time she won two gold medals in women’s soccer at the Olympics and the Women’s World Cup.
.”It has been a rollercoaster of a journey to get to this point. We are beyond excited to be parents! I couldn’t have gotten through this without my amazing husband, Brian. He truly kept me going,” Lloyd said in an Instagram post on Wednesday.
Questions arose about Lloyd’s decision to hang up her boots in 2021, as opposed to following in the footsteps of Tom Brady, who played until the age of 45. “Well, Tom Brady doesn’t have to have kids, that’s the one thing, for starters. My husband, Brian, and I are eventually going to start a family, so the clock’s kind of ticking on that,” she continued.
Lloyd played for 22 years, the last 12 of which were spent as a professional, and during that time she was twice named the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year. She had brief stints at Manchester City in 2017 and enjoyed spells at a variety of U.S. clubs, including NJ/NY Gotham FC, Houston Dash, and Western New York Flash.
After making her final USWNT appearance against South Korea, she left the game after 65 minutes, having scored 134 goals for her country overall.
