ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi could play soccer in Major League Soccer before he decides to retire from the sport that made him rich and famous.
This scenario occurs after Messi said in a recent interview that he wants to play in the United States in the final years of his career.
Also on Wednesday, Inter Miami CF co-owner Jorge Mas said he and his partner British soccer legend David Beckham are now working hard to bring Messi to the MLS and play for their team.
Mas said they are now talking with Messi for a possible 10-year contract extension with FC Barcelona that includes a two-year playing year with Miami in the MLS.
He said having Messi on their team is a huge boost for the MLS since the Argentine is one of the top professional soccer players in the world.
“David and I have been working hard, we have aspirations of bringing the best players here and Messi is a generational player, arguably the best player of all time,” Mas told the Miami Herald.
“I am optimistic Messi will play in an Inter Miami shirt because I think it will complete the legacy of the greatest player in our generation and will meet with the ambitions of the owners of Inter Miami to build a world-class team,” Mas added.
It was learned that Messi has recently bought a condo in Miami.
Messi, 33 has yet to sign a contract extension with Barca as his contract with the team is set to expire at the end of June.
At the moment, Messi is currently with the Argentina national team preparing for the Copa America, with his dad, Jorge, taking charge of contract negotiations with Barca.
