ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Witnessing an Atlanta United player line up next to one of the greatest soccer players in history is pretty cool. Thiago Almada had the chance when the Atlanta United midfielder made his senior international debut for Argentina on Friday night.

In the 54th minute of the national team’s exhibition game against Honduras in Miami, Florida, Almada was substituted in. During the game, he completed 91 percent of his passes, made one shot attempt, and instigated a takeaway that resulted in a shot on goal in Argentina’s 3-0 victory.

Lionel Messi, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, and leader of the Argentina men’s national team, was on the field with Almada. Following the game, Messi commended Almada. “Thiago is very fresh. He’s a speedy player who can play 1v1. He’s clever and isn’t afraid of anything,” Messi said.

The 21-year-old Almada’s international debut follows some significant media coverage. He recently received his first call-up for an international team and was named to the 22 Under 22 presented by BODYARMOR. He now has the potential to establish himself before Argentina travels to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup in 2022. Tuesday is the final international friendly for Argentina in September.
