ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Former FC Barcelona superstar Argentine striker Lionel Messi is set to sign a two-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain, Messi’s father Jorge told the media on Tuesday.
Jorge Messi made the statement as his son boarded a private plane at Barcelona’s El Prat airport bound for Paris, France for the formal signing of his contract.
Sources said PSG’s contract offer for the six-time Ballon d’Or winner will see him earn more than PSG and Brazil star Neymar, Messi’s former teammate at Barca.
It was also learned that Messi will stay at Hotel Le Royal Monceau, the same location Neymar stayed when he completed his world record €222m move to PSG in 2017.
PSG was able to contact Messi on August 4 after his supposed five-year contract with Barca fell down due to economic problems.
Sources said PSG sporting director Leonardo and chairman Nasser al Khelaifi are heavily involved in the discussions with Messi, having been in contact with his father Jorge for some time.
Analysts said if by chance PSG signs Messi into a contract it would increase the likelihood of Kylian Mbappe, who is out of contract next summer, signing a new long-term deal with the club.
In agreeing to sign the new deal with FCB earlier, Messi has also decided to cut his pay.
The 34-year-old’s previous contract, which was worth over €500 million ($594m) over four years, expired at the stroke of midnight on June 30.
After his contract expired many people speculated that Messi will decide to play somewhere else.
However, after careful thinking, Messi eventually decided to sign a new deal with Barca.
Aside from his desire to continue playing for FCB, one reason Messi decided to re-sign with the soccer club is due to the return of Joan Laporta as FC Barcelona president in March.
