Atlanta United’s busy Secondary Transfer Window is beginning to look less like a collection of individual moves and more like a new roster taking shape.
Júnior Alonso and Paulo DÃaz arrived first. Breel Embolo has now made his first start. Mauricio Amaro followed after a lengthy visa process, and the young Uruguayan midfielder is already being trusted with significant minutes.
For Mauricio Amaro, that opportunity arrived quickly.
The 21-year-old midfielder made his first start in Atlanta United colors Wednesday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, playing all 90 minutes. Now, he and the Five Stripes head to Washington to face D.C. United on Saturday in a match Atlanta badly needs if it hopes to keep its playoff push alive.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
And after what Amaro showed in his first starts, he could once again have an important role in the middle of the field.
Mauricio Amaro’s Arrival Comes at a Critical Time
It isn’t often that a 21-year-old player arrives at a new club with so much attention surrounding his debut.
Amaro’s arrival was delayed by the visa process, but he continued working to stay ready while waiting for the paperwork to be completed.
That preparation appears to be paying off.
After making his debut against Inter Miami, Amaro moved into the starting lineup and completed his first 90-minute performance for Atlanta.
The timing could prove important.
Atlanta United is attempting to integrate several new pieces while simultaneously trying to close ground in the Eastern Conference. Amaro’s ability to immediately contribute gives Tata Martino another option in a midfield that has undergone significant change.
What Mauricio Amaro Brings to Atlanta United
Amaro’s game is built around physicality, defensive awareness and positioning.
The Uruguayan can play as a No. 6 or move farther forward into a No. 8 role, but the early signs suggest Martino sees him primarily as a defensive midfielder.
That’s a role Atlanta has needed to stabilize as the club continues adjusting its playing style.
Amaro described himself as a technical player who understands marking and positioning.
“What I can help the team with is marking, technically and positioning the team well.”
Those qualities could become especially valuable for a team trying to find greater consistency.
Atlanta has shown flashes of strong performances this season, but maintaining that level across 90 minutes has been one of the team’s biggest challenges.
A midfielder capable of protecting the back line, winning the ball and helping organize the team could give Atlanta another foundation from which to build.
A Different Style of Play
Amaro is also stepping into an Atlanta United team that is trying to establish a different identity.
The midfielder described MLS as a league with more physicality and transitions compared with what he experienced previously.
That transition will take time.
But Amaro’s profile appears to fit the direction Atlanta is pursuing under Martino.
He isn’t being asked simply to sit in front of the defense and recycle possession. His ability to compete physically and move the ball forward gives Atlanta another way to transition from defense into attack.
For a team that has struggled at times to maintain consistency, that balance could be important.
Amaro Is Still Learning — And That’s Part of the Plan
Despite the responsibility being placed on him, Amaro isn’t approaching his first MLS season as if he has everything figured out.
Quite the opposite.
The young midfielder said his personal expectation is to continue improving every day and learn from the experienced players around him.
That mindset could serve him well as he adjusts to a new country, a new league and a new tactical system.
Amaro also isn’t rushing his international ambitions.
He has represented Uruguay at the youth level and understands that the senior national team is something that will come when the time is right.
“I will arrive when I have to arrive, in no rush.”
For Atlanta, the immediate priority is much closer to home.
Atlanta United Still Has Work to Do in the Playoff Race
The Five Stripes enter Saturday’s match against D.C. United knowing there isn’t much room left for dropped points.
Atlanta’s 3-2 loss to Orlando City on Wednesday increased the pressure surrounding the final stretch of the regular season.
Martino was blunt about the situation.
“We aren’t in a position to play around much with results.”
D.C. United currently sits six points ahead of Atlanta and is 11th in the Eastern Conference, just outside a Wild Card position.
That makes Saturday’s match particularly important.
A win would give Atlanta an opportunity to close the gap while simultaneously denying a direct competitor valuable points.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw when they met in March, giving Atlanta another reference point heading into the rematch.
Tai Baribo Adds Another Test for Atlanta’s Defense
While Amaro’s midfield role will be one of the storylines to watch, Atlanta’s back line will have its own challenge.
D.C. forward Tai Baribo has scored 14 MLS goals this season, tying him for third in the league.
That puts additional pressure on Atlanta’s recently reshaped defense.
The arrivals of Júnior Alonso and Paulo DÃaz have given Martino new options in central defense, while the midfield’s ability to provide protection in front of them will also be critical.
That is where Amaro could become particularly important.
If Atlanta can win the midfield battle and limit D.C.’s ability to transition quickly into Baribo, the Five Stripes can give themselves a better chance of controlling the match.
Consistency Is Still the Biggest Question
Martino’s comments ahead of the D.C. United match pointed toward one of Atlanta’s biggest problems this season: finding the same level of performance from one match to the next.
Atlanta showed encouraging stretches against Inter Miami and Orlando City, but the results were very different.
The Five Stripes have also struggled to maintain their best level for an entire match.
Martino said rotation could help the group recover intensity, particularly with the demanding schedule.
But integrating multiple new players adds another layer of complexity.
Amaro is one of those pieces.
So are Embolo, DÃaz and the other players brought in during the transfer window.
The coaching staff now has to figure out how those pieces fit together quickly enough to make a difference before Atlanta’s playoff opportunity disappears.
What Mauricio Amaro’s Emergence Means for Atlanta United
The early stages of Amaro’s Atlanta United career offer a glimpse at what the club may be trying to build.
He’s young, but he already has professional experience.
He’s physical, but technically capable.
And while he can operate in different midfield roles, his defensive intelligence gives Martino a player who can potentially anchor the middle of the field.
The most important part is that Atlanta appears willing to trust him.
After waiting through the visa process, Amaro has moved quickly from new arrival to potential starter.
That says something about both the player’s readiness and the club’s need for what he brings.

Next Up: D.C. United
Atlanta United travels to Washington on Saturday with the playoff race becoming increasingly urgent.
The Five Stripes need points.
Amaro has another opportunity to show what he can bring.
And Martino has another chance to see whether the collection of new pieces is finally beginning to look like the team he envisioned when he returned to Atlanta.
The 21-year-old midfielder may be only at the beginning of his MLS journey.
But with Atlanta’s postseason hopes on the line, his next chapter is arriving quickly.
ASN TAKE
Mauricio Amaro may not have arrived with the same headline power as some of Atlanta United’s other summer additions, but his role could become one of the most important.
Atlanta needed more stability in midfield, particularly defensively, and Amaro’s physicality, positioning and willingness to compete give Tata Martino another tool.
The bigger question isn’t whether Amaro can contribute.
He already is.
The question is how quickly he can become comfortable enough in MLS to help Atlanta consistently control matches rather than simply producing strong stretches.
With the playoff race tightening, Atlanta doesn’t have the luxury of waiting until 2027 to find out.
