Two Mercer Bears stand tall both on the pitch and in the classroom. Graduate student Nick Wanzer and senior Sekou Agard have been named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Men’s Soccer Team, showcasing their exceptional achievements as student-athletes.
From Frisco, Texas, Wanzer’s story is one of relentless dedication. This marks his third Academic All-District selection, and it’s easy to see why. A former marketing and finance double major with a minor in management, Wanzer graduated last year with a stellar 3.80 GPA. Now pursuing an MBA, he’s upped the ante with a 4.0 GPA in his graduate studies.
On the field, Wanzer has been a staple of Mercer’s lineup for five seasons, amassing 85 appearances, 82 starts, and over 7,000 minutes of play. His contributions helped secure two SoCon Tournament titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances for the Bears. With 23 points to his name and a knack for shining in high-pressure moments, Wanzer’s career is lined with accolades, including SoCon All-Tournament honors and the prestigious SoCon Pinnacle Award in 2023 for the highest GPA on a tournament-winning team.
Hailing from Snellville, Georgia, Agard is a powerhouse on both ends of the pitch. This is Agard’s second Academic All-District nod, a testament to his dedication as a computer engineering major with a 3.55 GPA. His academic prowess has earned him a spot on the national ballot for CSC Academic All-American honors, with results set to be announced on December 10.
On the field, Agard’s impact has been monumental. A consistent presence with 75 appearances, 70 starts, and over 6,400 minutes, Agard has helped anchor Mercer’s defense to two SoCon Tournament titles. But 2024 was a breakout year offensively for the defender, as he tied for the team lead with a career-high five goals.
Agard’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. He’s earned back-to-back All-Conference First Team honors, was named the 2023 SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player, and claimed a spot on the United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Third Team. In October, Top Drawer Soccer ranked him 38th among the nation’s top 100 players, cementing his status as one of the elite in collegiate soccer.
As Wanzer continues to lead by example and Agard awaits potential All-American recognition, both players have etched their names into Mercer soccer history. Their success highlights the Bears’ commitment to cultivating talent both on and off the field.
