In a move that has Five Stripes fans buzzing, Miguel Almirón has officially returned to Atlanta United on a Designated Player deal through 2027, with an option for 2028. The announcement marks the long-awaited return of one of the club’s most electrifying players, a key figure in Atlanta’s unforgettable 2018 MLS Cup run.
From Atlanta to England and Back Again
Almirón originally played for Atlanta United from 2017-2018, lighting up MLS with his pace, playmaking, and relentless attacking energy. His performances earned him a record-breaking transfer to Newcastle United in 2019, where he competed in the Premier League for six seasons, making 186 appearances and scoring 23 goals.
Among his many highlights at Newcastle, Almirón scored against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2023 Champions League, proving he could deliver on Europe’s biggest stage.
But for Atlanta fans, the most memorable Miggy moment might have come in 2023, when Newcastle played a preseason match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Almirón, facing his former home crowd, scored in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea—and the roar from the Atlanta faithful made it clear: Miggy was still one of their own.
“I feel so much warmth from the fans, and I have so much love for them as well,” Almirón said at the time. “I’m so happy they were able to enjoy a game as good as this one.”
